Ok, so when I go to places like twitchy or chicks on the right, the graphics and text on the page bleed into where they should not be. Right now I am having a hard time typing because I see in the text box the text at the top of the page here. (Another kind of problem with firefox chang category.

Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first) using either of these:

  • While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

For problems that span multiple sites, an add-on or global setting is a more logical culprit. Could you disable all nonessential extensions, restart Firefox, and see whether that makes any difference?

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions category

Ok, so there has been a couple of times that I accessed the help menu, and just clearing the cache worked, but only a couple of times and only until it shut down, when I reopen the problem is back. I am totally computer illiterate, and that add on page is really scary to me, and the text is doing that weird thing so I can not read it easily and have no idea what any of those things are anyway. I did the cache and cookie thing and it did not work, am I supposed to shut down and reopen?

Hi Ricci, if you are nervous about disabling your extensions, we can take a look at your list first. If you open the following page, the Extensions should be listed in the second table:

Help > Troubleshooting Information

When you copy and paste that table, the result here will be a bit ugly, but regular forum readers should be able to figure it out.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" in case the current setting is causing problems.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)

Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with overlapping text.

Would you believe that I went to get a screen shot and for only the third day in MONTHS it is working properly. Maybe doing what was above fixed it. I am going to shut down and then come back and see if it gets jacked up again. Thank you jscher2000 and cor-el. If it happens again, I will be back. Actually, I will post either way. Again, thanks!!

OK, so I guess I can no longer update my javascript, and it has been disabled due to it being too old a version. I am still on Windows2000, so have I pretty much hit a wall here with my OS?

more options

JavaScript is built-in to Firefox, and nearly all sites still should support Firefox 12. It should not be disabled or need to be updated.

If you are not able to update the Java plugin, that could pose a problem on some sites which require Java. Firefox now disables the older more insecure versions of the Java plugin for your protection. In some cases, you might have the option to re-enable them when needed on the following tab, but for general browsing, it isn't safe:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins category
