Hi gregverena,

You should take a look at this thread:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/761758

There are a lot of good suggestions in there. Hopefully one of them will help!

Thanks - I've tried pretty much all suggestions- even re installed firefox- I now see that the bookmark function doesn't work at all. I can't even bookmark new pages. I have the bookmarkshtml file I want but the bookmark thing doesn't recognize it, even though I've placed it in profiles. This is very weird. Something is turned off, but I don't know what - could there be something in windows? I've just noticed that the link color changing and bookmarks work in Internet Explorer- so must be a firefox issue.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

You can also try to repair the places database with this extension:

cor-el Thanks! the maintenance add-on fixed the highlighting problem. Now, if I could figure out how to re-install my saved passwords it will help - these are all gone . I'll bet they're somewhere!

Also, while we're at it - is it possible to restore saved emails to thunderbird? where are they saved? Can they be added on to current ones or only overwrite current ones. Thanks-

You're welcome

The passwords are stored in the signons.sqlite database file and encrypted with a key that is stored in the keys.db file.
If you want to recover lost passwords then you need to restore a backup of both files.

well, haven't been successful with that yet. Here's something else. Before changing anything , I backed up the entire c: to an external disc. When I try to open firfox, get message: The procedure entry point NSS_InitializePRErrorTable could not be located in H:Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\nss3.dll

what is this and where is it? I tried searching and can't find it anywhere. What's the point of backing up programs if they can't be accessed? Thanks.

Such an error can be caused by a corrupted Firefox installation that still has files from an older Firefox installation or files are missing.
You need to delete that Mozilla Firefox folder and reinstall a clean copy of Firefox.
