Every time I try to use foxfire, it tells me it is not up to date and is dangerous, click here and get an update. I do that and it asks me if I want to install anyhow. I say yes. It does its mickey mouse. Next time I come it it tells me its not up to date. This has happened at least ten time. We're in a loop

Your UserAgent string in Firefox is probably messed up by another program that you installed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Agent

type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
Filter = general.useragent.
Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset.
Then restart Firefox

didn't work. when i put in general.useragent, I got three choices, all of them longer than the one you gave me. nonetheless I right clicked and saw nothing to bold

I got through all the moves, but when I downloaded firefox, I did the save bit, but after it supposedly did so, the box at the upper left simply sat there and did nothing. After I waited a minute or so and nothing happened, I closed the box and opened fire fox again, and I got the same warning.

Which version do you see reported at the top of the Help > About window?

If that doesn't match the version that you see in the user agent then some prefs are wrong.

In that case see (you may still need to do this if you really have a Firefox 3.0.19 version):

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
  • Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
