This has happened quite suddenly. Nothing typed in the box will load, the history suggestions won't load, but I can make new bookmarks and they will load. Google links work. I have made no changes to Options. I am using Fx 3.5.17 because I don't want to lose TabKiller. (I loathe and detest tabs.) I use Windows XP Pro set to classic mode. I am put off the new Fx by the talk of 'awesomeness', a word I associate with 13 year old total non-entities and middle aged men who want to be trendy, but haven't realised that they never will be. I want a working plain browser. Not tabs and awesomeness.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

There is a version of Tab Killer compatible with Firefox 3.6.x on the website of the developer.

Thanks. I've discovered a little green arrow in the box, and can load the page by clicking it. I've never had to do that before - just press Enter. Thanks also for the link to 3.6 - I've been looking for an update that wasn't the latest version. I don't trust latest versions. Could word be passed on to whoever does the website that that ought to be easier to find, and so ought this place. I joined, activated and posted and couldn't find my way here until an email arrived. I'm not exactly a newcomer to computers - having worked with both Mac and PC from OS1 and MS-DOS 3.0 respectively, and for leisure having made around 20,000 edits at Wikipedia. I found the Mozilla pages as bad as Google's for finding things of use, and consider those animals to be the product of a 30 year old trying to cater to 13 year olds. 8-[ for the site, 8-) for the help. End of gripe.

Actually, the problem is not with the bookmarks. They work fine. I always start on a blank page, and the history is there. It and the URL box won't do anything with Enter - just the little green arrow (which I don't remember having seen before, but might just have ignored). Got it! It's AVG Safe Search. I'm on AVG Free 2012.0 1831, so it looks like the trouble with 8.0 is back. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions may need updating as it tells you to go to 8.5 or above. I've realised now that this started when I updated AVG. Damn thing's blocking the Enter key. I'm also getting the 'Firefox is causing high CPU usage' message. I'm disabling it, but won't be restarting browser yet. Will report back when I find out more.
