Reloads old and unwanted tabs on restart

more options

Hi I use v3.6.20. The newer versions feel too much like IE to me. A step back in appearance for Firefox. But I digress. A while ago I had quite a lot of tabs open and saved them for use again on re-opening. Once done with them, I closed them. Sometimes, now, when I re-open Firefox those old, unwanted tabs keep reappearing and the tabs I thought I had saved and still needed to use have to be dug out of the history (if I can find them in there). How can I make those closed tabs *stay* closed?

Please mark something as solved so others will see your answer that setting multiple pages as home page will do that as well.

It is easy to make 51 pages your home page so probably not difficult to do it accidentally.

Since the default shows only about 5 tabs at once, you might be interested in a tab counter, the one I use is

and while the extension does have some options, I include more styling changes for it so it doesn't look like a tab.

That is improved a bit on the current Firefox 6.0 (Firefox 4.0+),. but only if you change your configuration options.

I lost my 3.6 system to double-check on thanks to an automatic update that ignored ask first.

In Tools > Options > General check the first drop-down you should have "Show my home page" for when Firefox starts.

In Firefox 6 it will make a big difference, but make sure you close Firefox with File > Exit and not the close window button in the upper right corner. If you terminate Firefox through the Windows Task Manager you would get your old tabs back by default/design in 3.6 upon crashing (forced or not).

In your about:config settings use these, they are what you will want on Firefox 6, so if something isn't needed in Firefox 3.6.20 it won't matter

  • browser.showQuitWarning user set boolean true
  • browser.tabs.warnOnClose default boolean true
  • browser.warnOnQuit default boolean true
  • browser.warnOnRestart user set boolean true

Check in your in profile that you aren't creating multiple versions of session history.

Not positive I didn't miss something, once your problem is solved, then please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.

I agree with you on appearance of later Firefox version, but you can fix it. I find it interesting that my styling changes without any loss of a toolbar take up about the same space of what is default for 6.0 and exactly the same same size as in Google Chrome which never had a menu bar -- 100px vertically includes title bar in my Firefox or what left of it in the case of Google .

You can make Firefox 6.0 look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 6.0, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.

There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional. Step 31 was the tabslost part, and step 41-46 is additional styling.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Thank you cor-el and dmcritchie. I looked at Tools > Options > General > Startup the URL for my home page included the URLs for 51 other tabs. Not sure at all how that happened. Windows Rot, maybe. Seems to be solved now.
