I started firefox 5.0.1 in safe mode (all add-ons disabled) on OS X 10.6.8 and in one window I opened about 10 tabs to different websites. I then opened another firefox window and opened a bunch of other websites in tabs in that window. After doing that I opened the bookmarks manager window and it is completely blank. I took a screen shot of the blank window which you can see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50842493@N00/5938191400/

This is repeatable.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

I deleted the places DB from my firefox profile dir and restarted firefox. Again, I was able to replicate the bug where the bookmarks manager window is blank (not displaying any bookmarks or folders) once I've opened a couple windows with a bunch of tabs to different websites.

Did it work at least once?

Do you have security software that might block access to the file places.sqlite?

The bookmarks manager window does work when I first start firefox and some times it works when I open the set of tabs I mentioned earlier however the problem does occur frequently enough to be a pain. Note that I do not see the problem when I run firefox 3.6.18.

I just tried again to see if I could recreate the problem using firefox 5.0.1 while it is in safe mode and I was able to. If someone wants to see if they can recreate the issue on OS X, I'd be happy to provide the set of bookmarks that need to be opened simultaneously, each in a separate tab. Or if someone has a debug version of firefox I'd be happy to run that as I'd like to be able to run newer versions of firefox without dealing with this issue.

Make sure that you have updated SQLite to the latest version (3.7.7) via your Mac Update.

I don't understand why I have to update sqlite other than what is installed on OS X. I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and when I run firefox 3.6.18 I do not see the same issue. If firefox 5.0.1 doesn't provide the correct version of sqlite then I assume that OS X would.

On Mac Firefox uses the SQLite libraries as installed on the Mac Operating System and doesn't come with its own implementation. So it is important to have the latest SQLite version installed.

Is there a known problem with the SQLite that is bundled with OS X 10.6.8? I am very reticent to replace the bundled SQLite with a different version. Isn't the firefox 5.0.1 for OS X tested with the native SQLite?

more options

And beyond that I don't have the issue I described at the top of this thread when I run firefox 3.6.18 which is also using the native SQLite on OS X.

Also, when I run firefox 5 and examine the open files I see: /Applications/Firefox5.app/Contents/MacOS/libmozsqlite3.dylib

but I do not see: /usr/lib/libsqlite3.dylib

I would expect that if firefox was using the native sqlite on a system it would have /usr/lib/libsqlite3.dylib open.

I just started using Firefox 7 beta and the problem of the Library window being blank after opening a bunch of tabs appears to have been fixed. Note that I haven't been using FF7 all that much but I did beat on it quite a bit and could not reproduce this bug. And I have Sync enabled (for more detail I opened this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672372 ).
