Issue

Firefox is crashing or closing unexpectedly

Description

I'm using vista and I'm running FireFox 3.6.6. I downloaded the newest update from adobe along with the plug-in from FireFox. After doing this every time I visit a website like youtube.com, FireFox will crash and will not respond at all and has to be closed with the task manager. I have gone to Tools>add-ons>Plugins, where I only have one "shockwave flash" player, so its not a problem with the older player not allowing the newer player to work. I cannot provide any Crash ID(s) due to the pages completely crashing and having to be forced closed.

Some Flash-based games can take more time than to load, so you may have to increase the timeout on crash protection. See Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again.

It's not games that crash, its the whole webpage and only when playing videos. I have tried that link already, none of it works sadly.

Having the same problem here.

Make sure that your security software isn't blocking the plugin-container process. The plugin-container is a new program and it is likely that security software doesn't know about it and blocks that process by default if it tries to access internet.

You can try if it works if you disable OOPP (Out-Of-Process-Plugins). You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to false on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process. dom.ipc.plugins.enabled (currently false by default) dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll (Flash) dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll (Silverlight) dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll (QuickTime)

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

dom.ipc.plugins.enabled was already set to false. I don't know if my security software isn blocking the plugin-container process, I'm using AVG.

I got the same problem.

As work around, I uninstalled the latest version of the flash plugin (rel. 10.1) with the tool from adobe, and reinstalled version 9.0r277

The old version is also download-able from the adobe website.

Now FF don't crash anymore, an I've still access to you-tube.

I've uninstalled all versions of adobe flash players from my computer but I am unable to find the version 9.0r277 or version 9.0 anywhere, version 10.0 always tried to download.

Check out the following site :

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html

You'll find version fp 2 till 10. I've downloaded the 9.0 After unzipping the file, you can chose the fp your platform.

I'm using win XP, with service pack 3 With the method, as described above, it worked for me.

For fp 9.0 there is a version for winXP, bur not for Vista. I don't know if it works for vista too.

I downgraded to Flash 9.0 as well and that has solved my problems.

I have downgraded to 9.0 now and the problem still persists.

@Paul did you uninstall your previous version then reboot before reinstalling?

more options

I remove always the whole history if I close FF, like temporary files, cookies, etc.. Check your settings in Firefox at : Tools - options - privacy

Further, after an important update I always check my computer with ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner It's free.

@Ed, Yes I did.

I also use ccleaner, which I used before my reboot to make 100% sure everything from adobe had been removed.

Firefox 3.6.6 crashes when trying to load pages from vimeo.com. Strangely it does not crash, when I do a session-restore. The page is loaded and the video is playing fine.

check for outdated plugins. my crashes on vimeo were caused by an old version of firebug. :m
