Please explain in simple terms (I am not an IT wizz) how I can stop the continual popups in Firefox 128 and Thunderbird 78 on a Windows 11 OS saying “Update Available” with a Download button very easily activated by mistake.

Each time I click Dismiss, a new popup appears either immediately or very soon. The popup blocks a significant area of the screen and will not move.

I already have Update Settings on “Check for updates but let you choose to install them”. There is no option to “Do not check for updates” on these versions of Firefox and Thunderbird. I already have Windows 11 Notification Settings on “Do not disturb” and all Firefox notifications to Off.

I have found the Mozilla Support article “Customising Firefox using Group Policy” at https://mzl.la/3bLnw2J but I do not understand it and the device I am using is not part of a group installation setup.

There is a Step by Step guide “How to stop Firefox update notifications” on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD-oXxrCCRs . This is clear to follow if I pause it frequently to absorb each step carefully. Is this safe for me to try given that I am very inexperienced in using the command line and accessing registry etc?

The Thunderbird popups have only recently started up and I would value advice on how to stop these safely too. I need this version of Thunderbird at present for particular reasons related to gmail so it is important I do not accidentally activate a download on that.

There were recent Firefox 115.16.1, Fx 128.3.1esr, Fx 131.0.2 and Thunderbird 115.16.0esr and Tb 128.3.1esr updates for a specific security fix as there has been reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild. The old vulnerable Thunderbird 78.14.0 (released three years ago September 7, 2021) is very behind on security fixes including this recent one.

Thank you Agent Virtuel and James for your replies. I will explore and absorb the links you give and post again when I have had capacity to do this. They appear to be referring to things I have already read about online but it may be your links provide extra info that helps my situation.

In the meantime, am I correct in assuming, if the computer I am using is not part of a group installation (but one managed entirely by myself), that the Enterprise Policy and Windows Group Policy are not practical options for me?

Also, what would really solve the issue for me is if I could set the popup windows, which cover things I need to see and access, to remain and be confined within the Windows 11 assigned notification area i.e. by clicking on the notification "bell" icon in the far right corner of the task bar, I am able to see all of what Windows 11 defines as nofications. That is what I thought the Do Not Disturb setting is meant to do. Does anyone know if the Firefox and Thunderbird update reminder popups are defined as notifications? If they are not, presumably this explains why they still happen during Do Not Disturb and despite the fact that I have all Firefox notifications set to turned Off.

I wish to be free to pay attention to updates as and when it works for me. If I want to know about an update I already know that I can find out about it by going to the relevant place.

The popup also keeps reappearing every time I change the screen. I just don't understand how one "no" or "dismiss" is not sufficient. I don't know what the purpose is other than to annoy and make it hard to work and easy to update by mistake when I have not chosen to.

From reading, it seems many other people are bothered by this issue.

Hello Agent Virtuel I have at last found capacity to focus on trying some of your suggestions. Sorry it has taken me so long. I wish to use Option 1 Policies JSON method following the Youtube https://www.youtube.com/embed/wiWZOm_UX30 -- being the one I feel most comfortable with, and can follow most easily. Before I actually do it, please can you tell me: Will it then become impossible for me in the future, if I need to, to manually replace my present Firefox version with a different one by downloading it from the mozilla site listing all versions, and then installing offline in Windows 11? Will it affect the uninstall and install processes? (I do not use the Microsoft store for installing programs, but go to the site of the source of the program/app.) If so, or even if not, what is the exact process to re-enable updates should I need to in the future? If I am happy with the result in Firefox, i.e. the big nag popup does not appear and obscure much of the window, I can see from your links that there is a similar process to disable Thunderbird updates. Is there a similar step by step set of instructions to follow e.g. the command/code to be typed in the file put in the created folder. Also I found it very helpful in the Firefox Youtube that it shows exactly how to create the file and the folder and exactly where to put them etc. At my skill level, I need this also for Thunderbird, if there is any variation, to be sure I am doing the right thing.

Hello

About DisableAppUpdate By way of illustration policies.json Firefox, take a look at the youtube video https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/forced-restart/m-p/50009/highlight/true#M17857 Thunderbird, take a look at the drive video https://forums.mozfr.org/viewtopic.php?p=947176#p947176

Thank you. I know you are trying to help me but I am finding it difficult to follow your replies and apply them to my questions. So sorry, I think I don't know enough to navigate and discriminate between what I need to know for my questions and what I don't.

For example, I don't seem to be able to find the relevant videos in the two links you have just given me. Can you give me the exact names of the videos or the exact urls so I can access them directly?

When you say: "You move the distribution folder to your office and stop Thunderbird start Thunderbird, to take into account" [presumably in order to be able to update or install another version of Thunderbird should I need to in the future], do you mean I need to take the distribution folder (containing the policy) out of the system program folder into a user data folder/directory, and then put it back where it was in the program folder when I want to stop the nags and updates again?

Is this the same for the Firefox updating and nags?

Is it an option to change the wording in the policy code from "true" to "false" to "true" to toggle the policy instead? or would this lead to other complications and moving the folder is more straight forward?

Hello

DisableAppUpdate Option 1 Policies JSON method, this is the same method to perform for Thunderbird.
