Search bar is pink and every time I open firefox the first time of the day it comes up pink. Very irritating and makes me wonder if firefox is worth keeping. Thanks

Unless you have a theme where the search bar is supposed to be pink, that is strange.

Do you notice any unusual icons in the address bar (such as a robot) that might be a clue?

If you need to change your theme, this article has more info: Use themes to change the look of Firefox

No it isn't the theme. There is a robot icon to the left of the search box.

You can hover the robot icon on the location bar and check what reason is shown in the tooltip (DevTools,Marionette,RemoteAgent). If the reason is DevTools then check in about:config whether these prefs have their default value (i.e. are not bold).

  • devtools.chrome.enabled => false
  • devtools.debugger.prompt-connection => true
  • devtools.debugger.remote-enabled => false

You can check if you may have a user.js in the Firefox profile folder that sets these prefs each time you start Firefox.

You can open about:config via the location/address bar. On the warning page, click "Accept the Risk and Continue" to open about:config.

This usually indicates that some process is controlling Firefox. When you exit Firefox and start it again, does it start up normally, the problem is only on the first launch?

You may want to scan your system for malware. The following article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful (either free, or offering a free trial): Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

Hoovering on the robot icon brings up: "RemoteAgent"

I have uninstalled mozilla from my computer and then reinstalled and I am still getting the pink search bar every time I start firefox.

I got some suggestion from the internet that says it is the user.js file. The problem now is where is this file located and should I delete it? Very frustrating.

Hoovering on the robot icon gives the following message:

"Browser is under remote control (reason: DevTools)"

The search box shows the following address, which is this page I believe...?

"https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1454606#answer-1665218"

All suggestions are appreciated.

Firefox will indicate whether you have a user.js file on the Troubleshooting Information page. To call it up, either:

  • menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (optional menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Alt+H followed by T

It is very long, so it's best to use Ctrl+F to search in the page for user.js.

If you do have the file, there will be a statement along these lines:

"Your profile folder contains a user.js file, which includes preferences that were not created by Firefox."

You can click the linked user.js to open the file for viewing in a tab.

Do you have a user.js file and, if you do, what's in it?

The user.js file is in your profile directory.

Go to about:profiles and look for the default profile; that may well be the only one.

On the line starting Root Directory is a button labelled Open Directory. That will open the folder in Windows Explorer, or whatever other file browser your system uses.
