I get this error when trying to access my email using FireFox. Lately this (or a similar) error happens weekly if not every couple of days. Always first thing in the morning, too.

my email works just fine using Safari so I am at a loss.

I have tried running FF (Firefox) in safe mode, ensuring outlook.live.com is an exception to the pop up window blocker, changed default protections on outlook dot com to none from standard.... Turned off ABP, clearing cache and cookies from within FF.

it may be worth mentioning that I can still browse/access other websites while outlook produces this error, and my network settings within FF are set to use default system settings (no proxy).

Hello,

I understand that you are experiencing an error when trying to access your email on Outlook.com using Firefox. As a Firefox support volunteer for the Support Forum, I'm here to help you troubleshoot and find a solution. Based on the information you provided, let's try the following steps:

Clear cache and cookies: Start by clearing your browser's cache and cookies. This can help resolve any temporary issues that may be causing the error. Here's how to do it:

Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner of Firefox. Select "Options" or "Preferences" from the drop-down menu. Go to the "Privacy & Security" tab. Under the "Cookies and Site Data" section, click on "Clear Data". Make sure both "Cookies and Site Data" and "Cached Web Content" options are selected. Click "Clear". Disable add-ons and extensions: Some add-ons or extensions in Firefox may interfere with the functioning of certain websites. Temporarily disable any add-ons, especially ad blockers, and see if that resolves the issue. You mentioned turning off ABP, but make sure to disable any other similar extensions as well.

Refresh Firefox: If the issue persists, you can try refreshing Firefox, which resets the browser to its default state while preserving your bookmarks, history, and passwords. Here's how to do it:

Type "about:support" in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. Click on the "Refresh Firefox" button on the right-hand side. Confirm the action and wait for Firefox to refresh. Update Firefox: Ensure that you are using the latest version of Firefox by going to the menu button (three horizontal lines) > "Help" > "About Firefox". If an update is available, follow the prompts to install it.

Contact Outlook.com support: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it's recommended to reach out to Outlook.com support directly. They may have specific recommendations or solutions for accessing their service through Firefox.

Please try these steps and let me know if the issue is resolved or if you need further assistance. Providing any updates or error messages you receive after following the steps will also be helpful in troubleshooting the problem.

Thank you, Suram Firefox Support Volunteer

Regarding the temporal nature of the problem: How long before it starts working normally?

Note that you may not wish to clear ALL cookies for ALL sites. If you only want to clear cookies for the live.com or office.com site, you can use the Manage Data button (just below the Clear Data button) to limit the damage to those sites.

thanks Suram080, I thought I had stated I had already tried most of the items you mentioned.

I have tried running FF (Firefox) in safe mode (aka all add-ons disabled, recently called "TROUBLESHOOT MODE"), ensuring outlook.live.com is an exception to the pop up window blocker, changed default protections on outlook dot com to none from standard.... Turned off ABP (once stand alone, but along with all other add-ons while in troubleshoot mode) Checked for add-on updates (Found none), clearing cache and cookies from within FF.

Next time it happens I will try the refresh feature. Should I go through clearing cache, cookies, and all of those other items prior to trying a refresh or just try it?

I have contacted MS (outlook help), they say that since it works in Safari then it is a Firefox problem, period. Even though I have seen similar posts to mine that have the JavaScript extensions as not loading the posts here say it is an internal MS Outlook problem because their JavaScript is not loading the right resources.

Hi jsher2000 and thanks for the post. Sadly there is zero rhyme or reason to how often this error happens, much less corrects itself. The last 2 times I have "reloaded" my inbox because I don't see any overnight emails in it the little icon bounces on the screen for what seems like forever. Both times I have opened Safari while FF is in the process of the reload and magically the outlook dot com website loads right after the page opens in Safari. Are the two factors related? who knows!!! at this point I am only noticing difference(s) to help with troubleshooting.

During this time that Outlook is stalled in Firefox, can Firefox load other sites (in a new tab or window) or are those stalled, too?

Oh, sorry, you already answered that question in your original post: Firefox can still connect to other sites while it is waiting and waiting for Outlook. Strange.

all other sites load fine while outlook is either loading (stalled) or producing the error above, Jscher2000. Including other forums, email boxes, and retail sites that I visit daily.

and you know, after I posted previously, I realized I never used to have to reload outlook. Now when I check email in the morning if I don't see any new emails I just right click the tab and hit reload. If it starts taking more than a minute or 2 to load, I open Safari so I can look at the emails that came in late night/early morning.

I have used FIRST AID (Disk repair) in Disk Utility to try and correct the issue (on both data and system drives) to no avail as well.

this time it was not first thing in the morning, more like 2 hours after using the computer (and after a FF update).

I did not open Safari while this was loading in FF yet, but am about to refresh it and try now. Interestingly enough, I hit the "REFRESH APPLICATION" button from within outlook, opened Safari, and just as soon as the page was appearing in Safari it also appeared in FF.... have I found a workaround??

over at the outlook dot com help they insist that even though it says there is a network error in the error listed above, I should not believe my eyes because the proof of Safari working shows their network is fine. They claim it is a FF problem blocking their website and if I want a better experience then I should use "EDGE" browser (HA HA!!) I did actually look at it and they are now offering a version for MAC's

Who are you using for DNS?

Hey John4SUSE, I have no idea who the dynamic name server is with my ISP (a satellite provider). Under network settings it only lists my router address as the DNS (192.168.1.1) and it is greyed out (as if unchangeable). Does that help in any way or is there other info I can get somehow?

You will need to get on your router to see the settings. Who is your provider? I would assume you're provider being satellite has something to do with the network error message. I'm also a hotmail user since 97 and rarely see these issues.

I would also go to here and clear dns cache. see screenshot

DNS 1 99.197.1.231 & 232 are the only DNS informations I can find within the router itself. ViaSat is my provider. it lists the following in the about:dns in FF: DNS suffix ViaSatDomain DoH URL DoH Mode https://mozilla.cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query 0

I tend to doubt it is a satellite issue just because other sites work just fine while outlook has an itch to scratch somewhere... But nothing would surprise me.

I'll keep the about:DNS in mind next time it happens (instead of my current workaround of opening Safari to get it to load properly). Maybe clear that cache after it happens again..

You can try these steps in case of issues with webpages:

You can reload webpage(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Settings).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> [X] Cached Web Content -> Clear

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window
