Today all my add-ons have vanished and many settings are different. What happened?
Was it some major update? Its a great way of making enemies. Making us waste our time for nothing.

You can check this article.
Firefox 109 comes with the new Extensions button as the new way to manage your extensions.
You can click the gear icon next to an extension or use the right-click context menu to pin the extension to the toolbar (Pin to Toolbar). To (re)move the extension from the toolbar back to the Extensions button drop-down, you can use "Unpin from Toolbar" in the right-click context menu. If you do not have extensions installed then this button takes you to "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions".
The regular overflow area (>>) can only be used for built-in Firefox toolbar buttons as shown in the Customize palette and can no longer be used for extensions. For buttons provided by extensions, the Extensions button drop-down serves as overflow area ("Pin to Toolbar" and "Unpin from Toolbar").
Why would any sane person choose to wipe out so much during an update? It makes me never want to ever update Firefox again. What other program does that? I can't think of one. I do wonder about Mozilla management. What kind of alternate universe do they inhabit? It seems to be very far from our world here on Earth. And nothing that seems deficient ever gets fixed!
I do appreciate the help here of course. I just wish the people at the top were more sensible.
So I switched profiles (only one other there) and it was not the original profile. So I have no idea what happened to it. Mozilla must be run by a bunch of lunatics. No sensible person would ever opt for decisions like this. So what's the point of the folder on my desktop? They should have a file in there titled: What do I do with this folder and why is it here? But that would require someone with a functioning brain to opt for that.
Unless you call them out on their idiot decisions nothing will change. Sorry to be so blunt but when you see mindless choices being made over and over something needs to be said. Maybe management is just a bunch of yes men/women who are incapable of bucking the past's trends. Tis a mystery. And I cannot believe I'm the only one who thinks like this.
How about a motion to vote: Don't wipe things out on an update!
And does anyone know the difference between the local directory and the root directory of profiles? Is the root the core control and the local is my settings/choices?
The root directory of a profile is where your personal data like bookmarks and history and cookies is stored. The local directory of a profile is where temporary data like the disk cache is stored and is usually not important for backing up.
