Hello Everyone,

I am not sure what has happened but I had tons of passwords saved in my Mozilla browser. I have been using this since 2019 or 2020 and saved all of my passwords there. What happened is I was using my laptop and wasn't aware that the charger is not plugged in. While working my device turned off because of no battery. I connected the charger and restarted my device like normal. After I opened my browser(Mozilla Firefox) and ctrl+shift+t to open all the recently closed tabs, I was amazed to see that it restored many old sites like 1.5 month old websites instead of the one's which I was using. However, the recently closed one's were showing in the history. I opened the tabs from history that I needed and started using it normal. I have using Mozilla Firefox for good 2 years I never felt the need to remember any of my passwords. Everytime I have to create an account on any of the sites I just create a password once, at the time of sign up only and then click on SAVE PASSWORD so I don't have to remember it. I am guessing this is the normal practice that everyone does or may be a cast majority. I was doing my routine work, I tried to login to my account using the same way like you put in your email in the email section and then click on password section and select the user/email you want to use a password for and sign in. BUT TODAY WHEN I FOLLOWED THE SAME PROCEDURE, IT DOESN'T SHOW ME ANY SAVED PASSWORD WHICH WAS QUITE SURPRISING TO ME. I OPENED THE PASSWORD MENU FROM THE TOP RIGHT AND I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THAT THERE WE ZERO, LITERALLY ZERO SAVED PASSWORDS. I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS BECAUSE THOSE WERE SO MANY PASSWORDS LIKE SERIOUSLY SO MANY.

THANK YOU, AMIR

Close and restart the browser. Is the problem still there?

What about the rest of your profile? Settings, bookmarks, history, passwords . . . .

Sometimes when the browser thinks there is a problem with the profile, it will create a new one.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Everything is there, including the bookmarks, history and profile... Its just that my when I checked my profile after my device restarted it was not syncing. I had to login again. I obviously didn't remember any passwords so I had to reset the password again.

Is the problem solved?

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

I tried all the options you mentioned in your previous comment but the problem is still there. I have scroll through previous articles related to my problem where usernames/emails are there and passwords are not showing up but they are quite old like from 2019 or 2020 and firefox must have changed alot till now. Plus those options are for previous versions. I will try to open this in safe mode and see if I can retrieve all my passwords from there.

Still looking for help but thanks for being active... I appreciate it.

Try rebooting the computer.

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address box. How many profiles are listed? How many should be there? Also, open the profile folder in your file explorer.

So I did look for the Old Firefox, copy pasted Key4 and logins.json(this is just a 3kb file) in the original profile but i didn't work. However, I am seeing these to logins.json-corrupt files(screenshots attached) that are 105kb. I am guessing this one has all the passwords.

Plus, I am seeing 2 profiles in the about:profile. I launched the 2nd profile in a new browser, no passwords there. I was thinking to login but i didn't because I only used 1 email to create FF profile. I thought even if I do, it would be a same thing because the email and pass is same. SS attached of 2 profiles.

Is there any way possible we can recover the corrupted logins.json-corrupt file?

Did you keep a copy of the old key4.db file as this file stores the encryption key for logins.json and that might be causing the logins.json.corrupt files ? Without the proper matching key file is it not possible to decrypt the logins.

You can check in Windows Explorer if there are previous versions of the logins.json and key4.db files available.

You can look a utility to browse System Restore points.

Make sure to keep a copy of all key4.db and logins.json files.

Thank you for your response. There is only 1 key4 and 1 logins.json which I copied from Old Firefox. key4 was last modified on 04/13/2022 and logins.json was last modified on 04/15/2022 07:16am PKT Time(I am guessing this is the time when I signed in again to my Mozilla FF account after my system restarted). I am seeing logins.json.corrupt file in my OLD FIREFOX. May be a dumb move but I copied the corrupt file to my desktop, and changed the name from logins.json.corrupt(in the properties it says file type corrupt) to logins.json and file type changed from corrupt to json. I tried to the change the file in the profile but it didn't work. Is there any way possible I can upload this file in my FF account to recover my passwords.

Or is it possible to contact FF support to help me with this???

Based on my experience, it turns out that sometimes Firefox just fails. I've been using a Mozilla browser since Netscape Navigator, and generally it's very robust and reliable.

The disappointing thing is that when it fails, it's the passwords part of the profile that seems to go. It's all very well for all the well-meaning contributors to tell you what should and shouldn't be in your profile, but when the passwords disappear - together with the backup - there's no apparent way of recovering them. That's why I make regular copies of the profile. Daily would be good, but I'm too lazy for that.

Given the frequency with which this problem seems to come up - as I noticed when my passwords were lost - and the importance of passwords to regular users of the internet, it's surprising that one of the programmers doesn't take an interest.

Hi

When the Firefox Account password was changed, any data that was being synced between this and another copy of Firefox was lost.

Do you still have those passwords on your other copy of Firefox?

Do you possibly have a logins-backup.json in the profile folder that has logins saved in it ?

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).
