No Choices In Background and Text colors

My computer almost feels like it's been infected with some sort of virus but from the other posts I understand that this is, for some reason, an issue where user control has become non-existent and that's how it was built. When I try any of the workarounds mentioned here I still have a choice between only gray and white for the background depending on what the theme is? I've tried both and many pages with the gray background open with red or green text and other sites with the white will show bright yellow text. I use Firefox for the outstanding privacy and speed and have for more that 10 years. Another reason was the control I had in making the page my own but that seems to have been taken away for some reason. Does anyone know how to actually regain that control without unsupported workarounds. Apparently the only actual choice is to install WIN11 (which has, once again, changed where menu items can be found and some disappeared altogether). Two miserable choices because someone thought forcing all pages to follow simple, but nonsensical rules. I've added a screenshot page from Ars Technica to illustrate. (I can't seem to add a link to the article without the long URL showing) The entire article is white text and simply disappears. What can I do to regain control?

Did you make changes to the default colors (text/background) in Settings as that can cause issues with websites that only specify one of them and assume that the other is default (black text on white background) ?

Make sure you allow pages to choose their own colors.

  • Settings -> General: Fonts & Colors -> Colors: "Override the colors specified by the page with your selections above"

Try "Never" if the default "Only with High Contrast themes" isn't working.

What do you want to change to the colors on webpages ?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not so much trying to change the colors as to change them back to what I've always had. A few days ago I started my laptop in the morning and all the colors were wrong. On most pages it's black background and dark blue text or bright yellow on light gray. I checked the settings you suggested and it was already as your reply indicated it should be.

On a possibly related (and paranoid) note, this did start about the time Microsoft started its daily "demands" for me to upgrade to Win11. I have 11 on a different laptop and it's just change for change's sake, missing menus, and programs that cannot be deleted to make it easier to follow you anywhere you browse, so I've been hesitant to do so. Or is that TMI?

You can select a theme that has dark text on the tabs (toolbars) if you currently use a theme with light text.

You can change this pref on the about:config page from 3 to 2 or 1 to revert to the Firefox 94 behavior regarding to prefer dark or light background for webpages.

  • layout.css.prefers-color-scheme.content-override [dark:0, light:1, system:2, browser:3]

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
