The "PRINT PREVIEW" option I have found under the "FILE" drop down is GONE!!! I Please tell me HOW to get it back (or at least find it somewhere else)! I absolutely DEPEND on this function for processing orders and printing packing slips !!!!

This is NOT an improvement for me!!! This is absolutely horrible!

You should get the Print Preview window if you open "File -> Print".

For now you can set print.tab_modal.enabled = false on the about:config page to revert to the old dialog.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Hi timestreasures, as cor-el mentions, Firefox 85+ integrates the preview and the settings and print dialog in a single overlay. If you spend a few minutes with it, what do you find to be the pros and cons of the new design?

@jscher2000, Frankly I see no "PRO" anything about this New Design. I want nothing to do with the "New Design" - discovering it was a horrible surprise (that being the worst "CON") -- it disappeared a function upon which I depend with no warning and no information about how to undo it. I am SO VERY thankful for your instructions on how to get out of the new design and switch back so I can use PRINT PREVIEW as before. I have no clue what you mean by "single overlay" and absolutely freaked to find Print Preview gone, leaving me unable to use a function upon which I DEPEND.

  1. I do not use PAGE SETUP online - I only use Page Setup in offline/word processing functions
  2. I NEVER use PRINT directly on internet pages, which content too often does not correspond with what I see for pages on the screen. If I DO want to print INTERNET pages, I first use PRINT PREVIEW to see where page breaks occur and adjust the % so what I want on a page will print out that way. Only then do I press "PRINT" on internet pages.

The combined preview/setup overlay has a scaling adjustment similar to the old preview screen, but you need to click "More settings" to get at it:

timestreasures, can you explain in detail why the new user interface is a worse workflow for you? The print.tab_modal.enabled configuration option will be removed in future. If you can give enough information about what you don't like about the new user interface then hopefully your issues with it can be resolved before the configuration option is removed.

I am sorry if I didn't explain myself well enough in earlier posts. What I DO NOT LIKE about the new version is that "Print Preview" is gone/removed from immediate use (File:Print Preview dropdown). I absolutely RELY on this function for my business and want to keep it immediately accessible which in the new version it is NOT! In the OLD version it is SO HELPFUL and SO EASY because it is right there, the "FILE" drop down says PRINT PREVIEW and with just one click I can use the function immediately. Not so in the New version.

When I want to print web pages maybe I am doing it differently than you? ALL I do, printing pages, is to PRINT PREVIEW and then click PRINT. I very seldom need any of the formatting or other tweak-type settings. ONLY Preview, adjust the % and then PRINT.

When I want to "Preview" what is on my screen, I do not want to have to jump through multiple hoops and go through several steps (click the 3 lines at upper right, or click maybe settings, then go wherever and then go somewhere else and finally get something to click on that will bring up PRINT PREVIEW).

It is integrated with Print now. Click Print to show the new preview overlay. There are some more screenshots of how it works in this article: How to print web pages in Firefox.

I just checked this, and it looks like there are like how many additional? steps, instead of only ONE simple, click. My take on this is that you made a very simple one click function into a very complicated multi click function.

When I print pages, I usually use ONLY Print Preview and then do not use anything in the page/printer options.

When all I want to use is Print Preview -- WHY do I have to click first PRINT and then go into page options !?? The OLD version is so easy - ONE CLICK - Preview the page to see what it looks like and adjust the %. Being unable to use Preview immediately from "FILE" is wasting my time, having to go in and adjust printer and page options. This is like "penny" situations -- a penny is not worth much but when you accumulate a whole jar full, it turns into a true consideration.

If this is forced on me I will get used to it, and I am incredibly glad to have this Forum to speak up with an opinion. I am not angry, just frustrated with a change that is going to be detrimental to me. I am probably an oddball to whom a little used function is most important.

I am sorry - I am messing just this simple reply function up. What I meant to say, editing my earlier reply, is,

When I print pages, I usually use ONLY (1) Print Preview and adjust the % as I want; and then 2) Hit PRINT - I almost never use any of the formatting options. (Which is where apparently the New Version is going to be burying Print Preview.)

Hi timestreasures, with the new design, you call up preview using any of these

  • Ctrl+p
  • File > Print
  • 3-bar menu button > Print

The preview appears with settings on the side instead of the top. When you expand "More settings", the scaling is there and you can adjust it and then click Print. The main difference is that the scaling percentage is set in a number input where you use little up-down triangles or type a number. It is not a drop-down list.

I think you just need to try it for yourself when you get a few minutes.

more options

To expand on what jscher2000 said: from what I understand your old workflow was:

  1. File > Print
  2. (optional) Change Scale
  3. Click "Print" button

With the new interface it is:

  1. File > Print
  2. (optional) Change Scale after clicking "More Settings" to expand it
  3. Click "Print" button

So the difference is that:

  1. The "Scale" setting is on the right instead of the top - not any less convenient as far as I can tell, just a different side.
  2. You need to expand "More Settings" to get to "Scale" - not hugely onerous, and this will actually no longer be necessary after Firefox 87 is released next month, after which the "More Settings" section will stay expanded for future prints after you expand it the first time.
more options

To be fair, as jscher2000 points out, there is also the difference that "Scale" is a number input instead of a drop-down list. That's already on our radar to potentially change back.

Your solution is greek to me. Also, File -> Print does NOT bring up the former Preview. The new one cuts off pages, doesn't give the full contents on a page [if there is more than one page of what I'm trying to print I get a blank page, only a part of one page and another blank page]. I used the previous Preview constantly, as others have mentioned. Being able to preview and adjust the parameters the way it used to work was perfect. I do genealogy research every day and print out web pages with information so I can WRITE on the those printed pages with comments and notes. This is the absolute WORST change Firefox has ever done IMHO. Give me a step-by-step instruction on how to bring the previous preview back with SCREEN SHOTS to follow. Not all of us know how to go into the innards of our systems. This is absolutely awful.

NO - you are mistaken, I am very sorry, but what I am USED to doing has nothing to do with the "PRINT" choice. What I am doing is to 1 - Click FILE

What appears in the drop down is:
       - Page Set up
       - PRINT
       - PRINT PREVIEW - which I click on and IMMEDIATELY a % box appears,

in which I can change the number

True.

Hmm, that might be due to something else since the logic of printing should be the same (except that Simplify Page is missing from the new print experience). You can start a new thread about pagination glitches, those are different bugs.

Give me a step-by-step instruction on how to bring the previous preview back with SCREEN SHOTS to follow.

See whether you can follow this:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste tab_mo and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the print.tab_modal.enabled preference to switch between the new experience (true) and the classic experience (false)

(4) If there is another preference named app.normandy.startupRolloutPrefs.print.tab_modal.enabled you can double-click that one to switch it to false as well. If you do not have that one, no need to create it.

Since you are setting to false, it will look roughly like this:

You said... (except that Simplify Page is missing from the new print experience)... I too am missing the old Print Preview. I used Simplify Page alot - it really reduced paper waste when printing as it removed unnecessary images, and other misc stuff on a web page that was immaterial to the main content. Where is that now, OR when will you please bring that back?

more options

I got Print Preview back with your instructions above. For that, thank you. But I did try the old Simplify Page and Reader View, and I have to say, Simplify Page is much better at reducing extraneous material, reducing font size and spacing. So please find a way, in the new system to bring back Simplify Page. Thank you.

more options

Hi judyg3, adding Simplify page to the new print experience is on the wish list for a future update.

It is possible to adjust the font size and line spacing in Reader View using its toolbar -- before calling up Print again. However, the margins are still pretty wide so there's some space wasted there in the name of legibility.

Thanks for the info on that. I'm still putting in my vote, request to give back Simplify Page. Thank you.

YOU MUST REALISE BY NOW THAT REMOVING PRINT PREVIEW IS NOT LIKED BY YOUR CUSTOMERS.IT WAS EASY TO PRINT PREVIEW AND ADJUST WITH EASE WHAT YOU WANTED TO HAVE ON YOUR PRINT OUT. NOW YOU HAVE TO GO INTO PRINT AND FIDDLE AROUND AND STILL NO EASE OF PRINT PREVIEW. IT'S ADDING SO MUCH STRESS TO MY WORK. TOO MUCH PAPER IS USED (SUSTAINABILITY?) THERE ARE PIECES MISSING ON MY PRINT OUT .IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT I DID WITH % NOTHING BLOODY WORKS. PLEASE JUST REVERT BACK TO WHAT WE LIKE AND FIND EXTREMELY USEFUL. I HAVE LIKED FIREFOX FOR MANY YEARS BUT I HAVE TO RECONSIDER NOW.
