Tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling (version 73.0). Install fails with the same issue when progress bar shows near completion.

Hi, try this: Right click the Firefox icon on your Desktop, or Firefox in the Start Menu programs > Properties (Compatibility tab), and make sure that Run this program in compatibility mode for: is NOT selected.

It may be caused by a know bug which will hopefully be corrected in a 'dot' update soon. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1614885

Compatibilty mode is not turned on. I am guessing that hardware acceleration mode is broken. How can I turn it off in the firefox configuration, when I cannot start firefox?

more options

As an experiment, I tried the following: 1) Turned on Vista compatibility mode. Then firefox would start up but all windows are blank. "Options" did nothing (no options window popus up). New windows look normal but they won't display any content. 2) Turned off compatibility mode. No change from #1. So... no error on startup, firefox just doesn't work. 3) Uninstalled firefox. Reinstalled. Same as #2.

So now my firefox is in the state where it does not error on startup, but it never displays and content, and "options" does not work.

As another experiment, I tried :run as administrator". That always fails with the original error "Firefox has stopped working".

Since you suspect HWA, see if there is any way you can start Fx in Safe Mode by holding down Shift, because that will disable HWA and extensions.

This time I uninstalled firefox, manually moved the profiles from their normal location, reinstalled firefox, and then it works.

How can I restore my profile without causing firefox to crash?

more options

Well, my success was short lived. After using Firefox for about 15 minutes, it stopped working. I don't get a popup error but it refuses to to display any content from any webpage or local file. Meanwhile, Chrome is working fine. Shutting down firefox and restarting it does not help. The firefox window displays itself but no content.

Hi Jim, can you confirm that Firefox is no longer running in backwards compatibility mode?

Do you run any "anti-exploit" software that hooks into other programs? Firefox 73 may be incompatible with some features of Windows Defender Exploit Protection or ESET's similar feature.

If you have the stomach for an experiment, could you test Firefox "Nightly"? That is the live development version of future Firefox 75, which has the latest patches for the problem of Firefox starting up but not being able to run child content processes, meaning it can't do much of anything. Nightly creates its own profile, so it can coexist with the regular release.

And then regarding recovering data from your older set of profile folders, you can selectively copy over key files, one or a few at a time. See:

Running firefox with shift makes no difference.

Tried installing Nightly. Install errored out "Firefox Nightly has stopped working.

Uninstalled the original (mainstream) firefox. Tried installing Nightly again. Same error popup. However, installed does seem to install firefox. Running the installed Firefox Nightly and it errors with the same popup.

Nightly behavior is worse than regular release. Regular release errors out but after attempting to run it a few times it will start. 1st window displays content! However, second and sebsequent windows will not display any content. Toggling hardware acc makes no difference.

Nightly will not run, period. It instantly errors out with the above error popup every time I try to run it.

I am NOT using compatibility mode.

Running executable as Admin makes no difference.

I am not seeing this problem with any other application including Chrome and IE. Only Firefox.

Tried uninstalling all versions of Firefox. Deleted Mozilla Firefox and Firefox Nightly directors in C:\Program Files. Re-ran Nightly installer. Errored out with the same error popup. Resulting executable errors out with the same error popup.

I am curious what Firefox is doing that is so different from all other browsers.

It's starting to look like something else is preventing Firefox from running. If you have any ancillary software/hardware such as security programs or a webcam etc., try disabling or removing them.

Tried uninstalling Nightly. Rebooted.Downloaded and installed a new version of Nightly. No change. Firefox will not start. All other applications working fine.

No webcam.

The only security I have installed is Microsoft Security Essentials and Hitman Pro. I tried turning off. No change.

O.k. something is stopping firefox from starting up. How do I get a log or other diagnostic. The only thing I have to go on now is c0000005 which is an access violation (memory error). I started up Visual Studio 2015 to see if I could get more information.

Unhandled exception at 0x000000013F6E2A39 in firefox.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x0000000000000000.

So an address is 0. Visual Studio wants firefox.pdb to debug further. That file is not present in the install directory. Is it possible to get it?

Commanding Visual Studio to continue past the memory error, the same error just repeats over and over again.

Also uninstalled Hitman Pro. No change.

It seems that if I can get my hands on the firefox.pdb file that matches the Nightly distro, I would be able to pin down the memory error to the module in which it is occuring. That might be useful information.

I tried uploading a firefox crash dump but the website won't allow it.

O.k. I added https://symbols.mozilla.org/ to the symbols sources in Visual Studio. Then VS complains about not being able to find DllBlocklist.cpp. Theavailable callstack is

> firefox.exe!mozilla::freestanding::patched_NtMapViewOfSection(void * aSection, void * aProcess, void * * aBaseAddress, unsigned __int64 aZeroBits, unsigned __int64 aCommitSize, _LARGE_INTEGER * aSectionOffset, unsigned __int64 * aViewSize, SECTION_INHERIT aInheritDisposition, unsigned long aAllocationType, unsigned long aProtectionFlags) Line 286 C++

Running Process Monitor and monitoring what Firefox is doing as it starts up, it makes vast numbers of calls into xul.dll. Shortly before the crash, there is a buffer overflow while reading from the registry entry:

HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\PreferredUILanguages

which is set to "en-US". Not sure why that would cause a buffer overflow. Immediately afterwords, WerFault.exe is invoked.

Another thing going on at abotu the same time is references to c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Scans\mpenginedb.db-shm

I stopped the MpMpEng (Microsoft security service) manually, and tried to launch firefox again. No change.

can you check if downloading the update to firefox 73.0.1 that was released just now can address your issue?

I installed and attempted to execute it a dozen times. ALways failed the same way as before. The traceback in Vis Studio is

I do have one more piece of information. Yesterday, I was able to start Nightly twice. And then it would not open any more windows or start again once I shut it down. I tried again many times today and always the same failure. I am wondering if it could be a race condition.
