You could try an extension which customizes bookmarks on the fly by  : Title, URL, date added.

Sort Bookmarks {link}

If you are using sync, this might cause sorting issues.

doesn't seem to work on my bookmark menu. it only affects the taskbar bookmarks.

oops. it works to put the most recent last (sort of?).

I have older bookmarks, then 5 folders, then the newer bookmarks. i want those newest ones on the top.

any ideas?

It sort of works. Seems my bookmarks are as follows - about 40 bookmarks, then 2 horizontal lines between them and a list of 5 folders. Then I have about another 40 bookmarks. The sort works on each section, but I need the bookmarks that are below the folders to be above the folders, reaching the top of the drop-down Bookmark tab. Any idea what is happening?

Hmmm. Have you tried tinkering with the customize layout? You can drag and drop the Bookmark toolbar Items and the configuration. It might be worth trying if you haven't.

You would have to drag/move all folder downwards to the bottom of the list and place a separator between the bookmarks and the folders to be able to sort the bookmarks via the right-click context menu.

How do I place a separator?

So the folders have to be at the top or bottom, not between? I use the folders relatively frequently, along with bookmarks listed on their own. I guess I could put the folders at the top and have all bookmarks sorted below them?

The default action for bookmarks sort is that the "sort" only works between separators, not sure if any add-ons can override that default feature. So the more separators you have, the more separate sort actions are needed and you won't get a true overall sorting as you want.

Right-click a bookmark Separator and use Delete to get rid of it.

Click-hold and "drag" up or down each Separator to move that Separator around in the order bookmarks are appearing in the user interface.

Also, are you looking to "sort" within each folder? If so, see if you are getting your desired results within the folders. My experience has been that the default "sort" feature doesn't sort into the folders level; that too has to be done folder-by-folder. And once again I don't know if an add-on can override the default features. I haven't used many bookmark-related addon's, so I don't know what's available.

Yes, you can move the folders to then top then add a separator via the right-click context menu or in the Library possibly via the Organize menu. If you have the bookmarks at the bottom then you can also easily add new bookmarks because a new bookmark is added at the bottom. Sorting is always done between separators or between the top and the first separator and from the first separator to the bottom.
