How to read full HTML content with an AddOn

I want to develop a Firefox AddOn. I still read and tried some of the the AddOn tutorials.

But it is still hard for me to start something usefull. I have no idea about JavaScript but very familiar with Python, C/C++ and some other languages.

One of my first tasks would be to read HTML content of the current page. I want to find and extract a newsfeed URL like this

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Aktuelle News von heise online" href="https://www.heise.de/rss/heise-atom.xml"> <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Aktuelle News von heise online (für ältere RSS-Reader)" href="https://www.heise.de/rss/heise.rdf">

Of course I do not expect a full solution from you. I just need a hint which of the multiple addon parts are responsible for a task like this? What are the keywords here? Where is the relevant part of the API reference.

Can you point me to the right direction?
