Why does firefox continue to auto update when I have it set to let me decide when to do the update?

I have mozilla set to notify me when an update is ready but I just watched it update with no input from me.

example: [no input] Double click on the Firefox icon on the desktop and it says wait while we install the latest update. Then the little updater box with the progress bar opens showing update in progress. I DID NOT OK AN UPDATE!

How can I rely on software that does not follow settings? I am using Win 10 and the most current {NOW) firefox thanks to it updating without my permission. This is also why I now use Chrome as my default browser.

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select Update.

[v56+]; Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Select Update.

Check the settings. "Do Not Check For Updates."

Also turn off Use a background service to install updates <Windows Only>

I currently have Firefox version 63.0 and it does not have the option "[] Do Not Check For Updates". Apparently someone thought they were Micro$oft and decided that we were not to be able to turn that off. The nearest it comes is: "[*] Check for updates but let you choose to install them" It updated with that setting without permission. I have watched it happen. Numerous times. Bzzzzt! DID NOT HELP. DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM!

I called for more help.

Firefox comes in two or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

Open your file explorer and removing the Maintenance folder; On my computer it is called; Mozilla Maintenance Service

The option to Never check for updates was removed from about:preferences. You can use the DisableAppUpdate enterprise policy as a substitute. https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md
