I downloaded an update and after restarting, there was no sign of Firefox except the icon in the taskbar.

If you can't get Firefox to open after an update, it's possible that the update didn't download properly and damaged your Firefox installation. You can just download Firefox directly from the Mozilla website and reinstall it.

Your previous Firefox data (bookmarks, settings, etc) will be preserved, even if you install a fresh copy of Firefox over your existing copy.

Hope this helps.

NOTE: If you are concerned about losing your Firefox data, you can run a backup of your Firefox profile(s) using the information found in the Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles support documentation.
