Can Firefox be installed to internal drives other than C: and can there be multiple versions of Firefox on one machine?

Hey all.

I am looking to download the Firefox 52 ESR (at least I believe it's supposed to be 52, I dunno if it's 52.0 or one of the later builds) which is said to still work with Windows XP, in the hopes of getting Youtube working again as version 28 works fine on everything BUT that as mentioned here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1234282 , however I am extremely pressed for space on the Primary drive marked C:, which has me worried about downloading and installing a new version onto my primary internal hard drive. However I have two internal hard drives, C and W. Can the ESR be loaded onto a different internal drive (i.e. the W drive), and if so, will it be considered separate from version 28, which is my current version of the program, effectively allowing me to run both versions if I wish to? I know there is supposed to be a way to set up "profiles", which supposedly allow people to run multiple versions of a browser, but I'm not clear on how to do so as I am not a Tech guy. What I would need are pretty much simple, idiot proof instructions, on how to do this, so that I can either have both versions capable of being run, or at least be able to install the new browser to my second internal drive which has ample space to handle everything that the browser requires, space wise.

Separate Security Issue, please update your Flash 22.0 r0 by removing it with this tool : https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html If you use it Reinstall with Flash Player Version: 31.0.0.108 Current Version https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

Not sure what version 28 can handle but your a magnet to be hacked with out of date Flash and out of date OS.

Can always if it will run on XP use portable apps : https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/legacy

52.9.0esr is the last compatible browser for XP/VISTA, support ended Sept 5th

Always :

SO get all that together and will post how to install it and run it.

edit: fixed a couple urls, a version and a date.

Not sure what r0 is.

Uhm...also, I'm kind of a tech idiot. Can you simplify any of this?

r0 is about the Shockwave Flash plugin version that shows in the System Details list.

  • Shockwave Flash 22.0 r0

I don't know what Flash version is supported on your XP platform because Adobe isn't very clear about the System Requirements for Flash.

Did you read the instructions in the PM I send as response?

If you have further questions then please use this thread.

The last version said a number of times to you is Firefox 52.9.0 ESR.

The key thing is to have Firefox versions in separate folders and to use separate Profiles for each. You should definitely not share the same Profile between 52.9.0 esr and the rather old Firefox 28.0

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

You could use the portable Firefox 52.9.0esr for now as it will not touch your old Firefox 28.0 install and Profile. https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/legacy

So...should I update Flash player then? Would that help the HTML5 player at all? I don't think Youtube even USES Flashplayer anymore, do they?

And yeah, I did, Cor-El. Sent back a reply. ^^;;

How would I get the portable version if I don't have a flash drive, or is that possible?

more options

No the HTML5 players do not need or use the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe but having rather old versions of Flash Player that has critical vulnerabilities installed on OS is not a good idea.

addons.mozilla.org/blocked/

Due to critical vulnerabilities in older versions of Flash Mozilla has Flash Player Plugin 30.0.0.113 and older on blocklist for soft blocking. This is why you have to click to play the Flash and cannot have the old version you have set to Always activate.

You can install the portable version on a regular hard drive, just like you would install Firefox. There is no need to install the portable Firefox version on a removable drive.

The portable Firefox is called that because it is more self contained. Due to this you can run it completely off a usb flash drive if you want. However you can also run it on your hard drive.

Oh sweet. So if I'm understanding this right, the portable version doesn't need to have profiles made? And can it run at the same time other versions are running?

Also, regarding 52.9.0ESR, it requires that SSE2 thing. I have Pentium 4, which runs 2.00 ghz, so am I right in thinking I'm screwed or not? Cause it seems like SSE2 IS running on my Pentium 4 or else I couldn't have run Youtube at all in the last few years, but I've heard that 2.33 is what's required to even run SSE2. Can I get clarification here?

Oh, and before I forget, how would I transfer bookmarks to the portable version, assuming my machine can use the portable version of the 52.9.0 ESR? Is it even possible for this portable version to get old bookmarks? I would almost assume I'd just import the bookmarks like you do normally, but as I don't fully understand how a portable version of Firefox really works, I don't feel sure about that kind of guess.

All Pentium 4 (aka P4) CPU's support SSE2 as I mentioned to you in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1234282#answer-1155894

Having a CPU that supports SSE2 or later is needed for Firefox 49.0 and later to run. With Firefox 48.0 and earlier it was possible to use a CPU that did not support SSE2 as some AMD CPU's did not when they were available during same time as the Pentium 4 CPU's were.

You said you had a P4 so that is why I said you can use the 52.9.0esr on WinXP.

Makes sense. Sorry about this. I'm not a technically minded due, so I'm pretty slow with most of this. Does anyone know if the portable version can be run simultaneously as a regular version or no? Cause I'm thinking of grabbing the portable version of the 52.9.0 ESR to see if YouTube works on it, as it's the only site I need it for right now. If it works, I may or may not upgrade my regular version to the 52.9.0 esr

Firefox 28 is so old that it lacks support of a lot of specific features (JavaScript, secure connections, cipher suites). There is no need to keep using this version if your operating system supports Firefox 52.

Right now, I only use four sites on 28 anyway. Only one needs 52, and I wanna test that 52 still plays videos on XP on the portable version before I update to 52, otherwise it's pointless since the other sites I use don't seem to use the stuff you mentioned.

Incidentally, nobody has said yet if the regular version of Firefox can run at the same time the portable version is running.

I can't find a portable Firefox 52.9.0 ESR version, only Firefox 52.8.1 ESR.

pkshadow suggested this site:

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox-portable-legacy-52 I THINK it has a 52.9.0 portable? Correct me if I'm wrong on that, please?

Yeah, looking back on the sites you linked, yeah, I'm only seeing 52.8.1 myself. But the site pkshadow suggested has 52.9.0, but doesn't show it as ESR, so am I right in guessing that means it's not an ESR and wouldn't work on XP? If that's the case, I'll grab the 52.8.1 ESR as long as it works on XP, which it theoretically should since it's an earlier version of the 52 ESR.

I still need to know if the full version and the portable version can be running at the same time. I wanna make sure that the ESR works properly with YouTube. If it does, I'll eventually update the full version over to the 52.9.0 ESR. I will admit, I'm sad you guys stopped support on XP before you guys made the switch to Quantum since, while it's missing the classic title bar at the top of the browser window, it otherwise works exactly like 28.0 and prior in terms of look without having to worry about issues like Classic Theme Restorer.
