current Firefox releases can no longer run Java applets. You would have to run 32-bit Firefox 52.9.0 ESR to be able to use Java.

Firefox 52 and later releases only support the Shockwave Flash plugin and disable all other plugins. If you need to use other plugins then you can use the Firefox 52 ESR release.

Why-do-Java-Silverlight-Adobe-Acrobat-and-other-plugins-no longer work.

I tried to install 52 ESR but it was updated to 60 ESR on September 5, 2018. I can't install 52 ESR even if I wanted to. After installing 60 ESR, Firefox still tells me Java is not installed even though the Java control panel tells me it is enabled.

You can install 52 ESR from here :

You could use the portable Firefox 52.9.0 ESR as it will not touch your regular Firefox Release install and Profiles.

As said Firefox Release since 52.0 which includes 62.0 Release and the current ESR 60.2.0 only allows the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe to run. Only the 52 ESR allowed other Plugins (need 32-bit on Windows) however the 52.9.0esr is now EOL with no more security updates.

IE is the only still supported with updates web browser that allows the Java Plugin from Oracle to run. Chromium, Chrome, Opera dropped support of NPAPI Plugins back in Sept 2015.

Hi, don't change your Firefox, but you might need to install more Java.

The JNLP (Java Network Launch Protocol) file should launch Java Web Start outside of Firefox. If this isn't being handled automatically, it could indicate that you don't have the necessary 32-bit/64-bit flavor of Java.

I run 64-bit Firefox, but I only had 32-bit Java installed, and Firefox didn't know how to open the JNLP file (testing Launch button here):

After I installed the 64-bit Java from Oracle, then Firefox was able to match the download to the correct program:

Your Firefox identified itself as the 32-bit version running on 64-bit FirefoxWindows, so you could supplement whatever Java you have now with the 32-bit version and see whether that works. Or if you have the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version, try the 64-bit version.

Here's the download page: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Any improvement?

Oh, I should mention that you can tell which versions of Java you have installed by checking here:

  • 32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java
  • 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Java

I seem to have missed the mentioning of JNLP in the question.

You can also check the JNLP setting on the Advanced tab in the Java Control Center (JNLP File/MIME Association).

Thank you for your input. I have Version 8, update 171 of Java installed. One problem I've noticed, and it may be a Windows 10 problem, but I cannot associate .jnlp files to be started by Java Web Start Launcher. On an older laptop running Windows 10, .jnlp files are associated with Java Web Start Launcher. On this computer, I only have the option of checking the app store to find an app to run .jnlp files. Don't know how to solve this problem as after installing Firefox 52 ESR, it can't find the Java app to run the .jnlp file to get access to the USPTO secure site I need to access.

Hi jjhaugen, Oracle's installer should create the association automatically. Maybe you should run the latest installer and see whether that helps -- the current update is 181 (July 2018). https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
