Firefox Quantum v 59.0.2 videos barely play while audio continues (Mac)

Postáilte

Since I installed the latest Quantum update 59.0.2 (64-bit) videos no longer play correctly in any format (embedded in news stories or Facebook, on YouTube, etc.) A split second of video will play, then freeze, while audio continues uninterrupted, then after many seconds, the video may jump to a future frame (or not) and freeze there, again, audio continuing to play uninterrupted.

I found the “Firefox’s performance settings” help page, and tried all solutions there, to no avail. I tried turning on the Hardware Acceleration, to no avail. I turned it off again. To no avail.

I looked through the forum for possible solutions and found none that matched my Mac (they were all for Windows) or the few posted solutions did not work/were not relevant.

My internet connection is hardwired to my machine, so it’s not my WIFi connection — and I had no issues with video playback in the past decade of Firefox versions until this one.

I know it’s Firefox as video runs perfectly fine in Safari.

My specs are: MacBook Pro High Sierra 10.13.3 Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB Memory Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2 GB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hi FredMcD

I started up FIrefox in Safe Mode and yes, the issue is still there despite what platform I am viewing a video in. (I tested videos on YouTube, Facebook and a local news station.)

Yes, I had already tried all the trouble shooting on the link you just provided, before posting my original help question.

So, yes, to summarize those suggestions: • I don't have pop up windows blocked checked on to begin with • Cookies: my "use custom settings for history" were already the way outlined in the link (I allow them) • I have only a few extensions and fewer plugins - obsolete ones were already uninstalled or updated when I downloaded the first version of Quantum • I had a cleared cache (I do this frequently, at least once a day, regardless)

And the last one - disable ad-blocking software...I do use this (DuckDuckGo) but I had zero issues with Quantum until the 0.2 update, that extension is up to date, and safe mode did not resolve the issue. For trouble-shooting's sake, I disabled this, restarted Firefox, then tested videos on a few sites and the video playback did not improve, furthering my belief that this is not the pesky culprit.

You can check the Web Console and the Browser Console for media related messages.

I'm afraid both of those links are over my pay grade understanding. I don't know code so both links info are foreign to me. The first link I couldn't even see if I could learn new skills, as it's a video, and well, I'm here cause videos don't play ;)

The second link, I opened the Browser Console and poked through what was there. Regardless of not knowing what to do with this info found here, nothing stood out that could explain my video playback issue with this upgrade. Everything looked like "font size errors, couldn't establish connections, and ID already exists"...

Try disabling Tracking Protection {web link}

Try disabling '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tracking-protection Tracking Protection]''' {web link}

Hi FredMcD - Disabling the internal Firefox Tracking Protection did not improve the video playback. I also tried turning off both the Tracking Protection AND my AdBlocker at the same time. (I restarted Firefox when I turned these off just to be extra sure.)

Nope. Even under those circumstances the video plays in the same manner as originally outlined, while audio goes forward as it should.

Since we're not finding the solution, is there a way to uninstall 59.0.2 and go back a version or two until this bug gets addressed? I can't work in a browser that is not playing videos... Thanks for any insights here.
