Last night, I noticed there was an upgrade available to version 58.0b12 64-bit of Firefox (checked for updates from within Firefox). I updated to this version and since then, I no longer have any audio on any websites. Those same websites work in Chrome, Edge, and Internet Explorer. I have checked to make sure the tab isn't muted (it's not). I have also gone through the steps outlined in the support article (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-to-do-if-firefox-wont-play-any-sounds) that instructs you to check your mixer, etc. None of that has changed and all of those settings are correct. I have also re-started Firefox with addons disabled (I only have one) and that made no difference. I have rebooted Windows...no difference.

This is on Windows 10 Pro, Insider Preview, build 17063.rs_prerelease 171213-1610.

All other audio works, directly from within Windows, and in all the browsers I mentioned. Just Firefox is broken.

Any other ideas? This is not life threatening, but is a real pain browsing sites like Youtube without audio.

Firefox version 59 will be released next month :

You could use Nightly 59 :

Try the stable build of Firefox and see if you get audio. https://firefox.com

I downloaded Firefox from the link you provided. It didn't prompt me to provide a target install directory. It overwrote my beta copy and used my existing profile (my bookmarks were there). Audio still does not work.

I also just tried a "Refresh Firefox" option on startup. That seemed to have wiped out my custom title bar settings, but kept my bookmarks. Audio is still non-functional.

Just uninstalled Firefox. Tried removing all the directories I could find with either Firefox or Mozilla as the name. Re-installed again. It noticed that I had re-installed and asked me if I wanted to refresh. So I said yes. No bookmarks, no addons, everything default. No audio in Firefox. Version shows 57.0.2 64-bit.

I just had a friend try Firefox on his computer. He's been a Firefox user forever. His Firefox no longer has audio either. This is not unique to my computer nor my installation of Firefox. Different computer, different everything. His version is 57.0.2.

Could this be related to the Windows version we're running on our computers? If so, Firefox doesn't work with this Windows version at all...at least for producing audio.

Did you check the Browser Console for error messages?

So obviously not something that's going to be fixed by trashing my profile, re-installing Firefox or anything else. Truly disappointing. If Chrome works, seems that Firefox could somehow figure this out too.

Would you please take a look at this bug report :

Thank you for your response.

I'm not sure how this helps me. I just re-installed Firefox and the version number is 57.0.2. The wall of text that appears after clicking on the link you provided says this has been fixed in Firefox version 59. I don't see a way of downloading that version anywhere. The latest beta I can find is version 58.0b12.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to get this fixed.

I'll grab the nightly version until it's fixed. Thanks for providing that information. I've only ever used the release version or the betas. I didn't know about nightly.

Thanks!

Make sure you use a separate profile for Nightly alpha builds as these versions will break profile used by current Firefox releases.

Excellent advice! I'm glad I checked this forum before installing the nightly build.

Thanks!

Firefox 59.0 will be released on March 13 actually.

Note the unstable Nightly development channel gets two updates with checkins each day so sometimes this can lead to issues until fixed, finished or reverted.

It is likely that this patch will be back ported to all least Firefox 58 and Firefox 52 ESR within the next few weeks, so keep an eye on the bug report.
