How can I get the "Recently Bookmarked" back in the new Firefox?

more options

The Recently Bookmarked section is gone from my Bookmark menu, after Firefox updated yesterday. Which means new bookmarks don't show and I therefore can't drag a new bookmark to the visible bookmarks in the beginning of the row of them, where I can easily see and find it. I have loads of bookmarks, and can't scroll through all of them to search for a bookmark. So I would like that function back, please.

Click on the menu -> Customize. Drag and drop the icon that says "Bookmarks Menu" back to your toolbar. It's the one you want.

Wow, I had no idea the list could be used for that.

I tested in "Nightly" (future Firefox 59), very similar to Firefox 57, which looks a bit random because it's test data and customizations.

When I use the Recently Bookmarked list on the Library button --

  • click
  • then Bookmarks

-- and drag one to the Bookmarks Toolbar, it duplicates there. In other words, it is still in the Other Bookmarks AND it's on the Bookmarks Toolbar. So that's probably not what you're looking for.

I can't think of a way around that, but I can hopefully provide alternatives that help:

(1) How to use the Edit This Bookmark dialog to move the bookmark for the current page (2) How to create your own Recently Bookmarked list on the Bookmarks Toolbar for easier access

Edit This Bookmark

When you are viewing a bookmarked page that you want to move to another location, you can click the blue star in the address bar and use the recent folders list or click the "v" button to expand your full list. By default, the bookmark you use will go to the end of the selected folder.

To move items already on the Bookmarks Toolbar you can drag them around.

Custom Recently Bookmarked List

Firefox allows query folders. These are not like normal folders, but instead show the results of a search across your bookmarks or history. "Most Visited" is an example: it shows the results of a search across your history.

To add a "Last 50 Bookmarks" Smart Folder:

(1) Copy this query string:

place:queryType=1&sort=12&maxResults=50&excludeQueries=1

I have bolded the part that specifies how long you want your list to be.

(2) Open the Library window ("Show All Bookmarks" or Ctrl+Shift+b)

This will display the Other Bookmarks category by default, which is fine.

(3) Right-click a blank area on the right and choose New Bookmark. In the Name, you can put something like Last50. Then paste the query string into Location and click Add.

(4) Drag the Last 50 "bookmark" to the Bookmarks Toolbar. When you drop it, the icon should change from the "globe" to the "gear" indicating that Firefox has recognized it has a query.

(5) When you switch over the Firefox and view the folder, it should have the last 50 bookmarks you added. (And duplicates created by testing that I forgot to delete...)

I am attaching 3 screenshot illustrating. (Yes, the icons on the Bookmarks Toolbar are customized with old icons; different story.)

This list has the same issue with copying rather than moving when you drag an item to the toolbar, but at least you can see the bookmarks right there.
