Is Firefox 53 the cause of Windows freezing?
Since two weeks or so, whenever I'm (also) running Firefox 53, all over sudden my whole pc freezes: nothing works anymore, no mouse, no task manager, nothing. FF does not create a crash report (doesn't get a chance to do so) All I can do is a hard reset. This does NOT happen when I'm not using FF. (Sometimes I get a warning that Firefox has stopped, but then it keeps running, so probably one of extensions or add-ons has failed.) I have a stand alone, always fully updates Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 pc. SFC /scannow was ok, CHKDSK had to repair errors in the volume bitmap, and memtest86+/8 passes came clean. I cleaned up FF and am now only running one extension.
There can be three causes: 1. Firefox 53 2. Extension(s) 3. Windows (latest updates) 4. Other/unknown
I generated a memory report, which is abracadabra to me, but I it points out what's wrong and someone can explain what to do. But how can I post the memory-report.json.txt?

Win7 Pro 64 bit FF53 w/ Adblock Add-on (no other add-ons, not even Flash) Norton Anti-Virus (just the corporate AV not the consumer bloatware) Open several tabs (youtube, yahoo...etc - nothing strange)
Let it run, keep clicking (+) and in a day or a few you'll get the crash described. The new FF tab becomes non-responding and the Windows OS layer locks up shortly afterwards (few seconds).
In my case, the crash is very unpleasant because what follows is a 2hrs RAID rebuild (windows requires hard reboot, not even a remote shell /shutdown works).

Just to add - my machine is a dev machine with plenty or RAM, resources...etc and no other cra-ware (no games, pron, or anything else but Visual Studio)
There are potentially many varied and separate causes of hangs and similar problems, that is why I suggest you all start your own threads and cross link them to this one. We will try to pick off and solve each problem if we can, and where necessary may need to file bugs. We can assist in filing bugs or file them on your behalf IF we are able to reproduce the issue ourselves, or if at least we see sufficient detail and multiple persons reporting identical issues.

I am not sure if the problem described by ArsTechnica is involved here or not. If it was I may wonder if it was because some malware was involved.
I do notice some posts believe the problem is specific to Fx53 or Fx53 and later. If that is the case then we need some sort of testcase or Steps To Reproduce and then need to track down when the regression occurred.
You did mention that you are no longer seeing this issue, and that you have started a thread about Fx54 issues you now see. That thread will be:

You are describing an issue that takes a day or so to test and is seen when using AdblockPluss and Corporate AV software on your Dev machine.
Are you not able to test and demonstrate this on another machine that does not have AdblockPLus and the corporate AV. If you consider the ADP or the AV is a necessary factor to produce this problem you may do better reporting the issue to their support sites.
If we filed a bug with the information we have so far it is unlkely the bug would receive attention other than for some triager to ask you to improve the STR and try to find a regression point with the mozregression tool.

Could you please open the Browser Console in the Tools > Web Developer menu and look for specific error messages as soon as sluggishness or other performance issues occur, or just occasionally? Especially look for ones starting with the following:
Could not write session state file Error: TypeError: invalid 'in' operand exn Could not write session state file Error: NS_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY: Handler function threw an exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)
Also: - Is your Firefox set up to use a proxy server or a .pac file to do so? - What is the manufacturer of your graphics chipset or card?
If you are willing to do so, please try a Nightly 55 or 56 build from here (installer) or here (zip), launch that instead of version 53 or 54 but with the same current Firefox profile or a copy of that profile, and report back how things go.
Now using Firefox 54 and I haven't had any problems yet. Also did some windows updates too. We'll see what happens. Keeping my fingers crossed that Firefox will play nicely as it's my favorite browser.

Had 4 tabs open... and opened another tab and was going to copy and paste a web URL into the address bar of this new tab when Firefox stopped responding. Thought it would recover from its not responding.... because sometimes it does... but it didn't. Went to use control alt delete to shut down firefox and windows froze up.
I wish Mozilla devs would spend time on fixing this problem. It's very annoying.

In my case, the OS crash and hard reboot lead to a RAID rebuild that requires several hours of wait time...
Maybe with FF55, your PC will burst in flames if you visit YouTube... That's progress !
I notice that when I've had Windows lockups, I seem to be on pages like Facebook for example where there's a lot of scripts.
Sometimes I will get an error message that says scripts are taking long and asking me if I want to continue the script, stop it or debug it. If I choose continue... Firefox will stop responding... sometimes it will snap out of this mode... but other times it results in a complete system lock.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.
