I have an infinite number of Bookmarks Bar folders
In my Bookmarks, I have an infinite number of "Bookmarks Bar" folders. Not only is this annoying, but I believe it may be causing my browser to not respond quite often. How can I resolve this?

Change your Sync password using one device, which will wipe your data from the Sync server and allow a fresh load of uncorrupted data from that 'cleaned up' device. And run Places Maintenance on each device before reconnecting to Sync with the new password on each of your desktop / laptop devices.

I wonder if that extension is still compatible with current versions of Firefox? Just a hunch, but since Firefox for iOS beta was released last summer, "we" seem to have had an 'uptick' in the number of support threads similar to this one - describing multiplication of bookmarks folders that aren't part of Firefox desktop / laptop, but rather added by a "3rd party" or a mobile device. I can't test it, as I don't have mobile device (and if I did it would be Android or FirefoxOS based). I get suspicious when an add-on that 'messes with' a feature as sophisticated as the Places database and/or is involved with Sync goes that long without an update.
And considering that Sync 1.5 was part of Firefox 29, I wonder how compatible iCloud Bookmarks still supporting Firefox back to Firefox 22 is with Firefox now-a-days. A little bit of incompatibility and/or corruption of data multiplied by Firefox contacting the Sync server every time Firefox is launched isn't very far fetched. And then Sync re-corrupting Firefox as soon as Firefox connects to Sync ... See where I'm going?

Are you using Sync? Or just iCloud Bookmarks?
I am using both. I use Sync for 3 computers and iCloud because all of our tablets and phones are Apple.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.
- Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database file then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync (temporarily) while performing maintenance/repair efforts to the places.sqlite database.
These could help you.
Use with Extreme Caution;
Bookmark Duplicate Cleaner {web link}
Scans for bookmark duplicates and allows you to delete them
Bookmarks Checker - check for bad links {web link}
Check favorites for broken or bad links. It checks for bad links and
displays a report if it finds something. Check for 404 links, timeout links.
More than likely using both iCloud and Sync caused that duplication of the Bookmarks Bar folders. You might want to consider using the new Firefox for iOS for your phones and tablets so you can use Sync alone and stop using iCloud. Or maybe disable iCloud when Sync is connected and disconnect from Sync when you enable iCloud on any of your devices.
FredMcD,
What exactly to you mean extreme caution?
the edmeister,
I have been using these together for years and it just started within the last couple of weeks. Do you think this could be our answer?
Did you run a check of places.sqlite like I posted above?

You don't want to remove all of one listing, leave one entry behind.

I did. I unfortunately didn't work. The only thing that works so far is disabling iCloud and Sync and manually deleting the bookmarks. The problem is that, if I turn Sync back on, the folders come back
You can delete the bookmarks that you are not using an you should it should respond better.

Thank you very much for your help! I quit the bookmark syncing of iCloud so I just used the first paragraph of what you last wrote. It worked like a charm.
