How do I disable the puple spectacles on the right upperside. There is no history, only of the sites which are bookmarked.

I have got this purple sign in the upper right of the browser. Every new tab I open says " your are browsing in private mode" (in dutch). So my history isn't saved. In my preferences I have UNchecked " always use privatebrowsing", and checked "remember history and downloads". And by the way I also checked 'always ask for where to keep downloads' which doesn't work anymore in this new version. Bug?

version 42, MacOS 10.9.5

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.

The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always use private browsing mode Turn on Remember my browsing and download history At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

I now know what the problem was: when opening a new private browsingwindow, all new tabs will be private too. Opening a new window with cmnd-N works normal... Still got the 'always ask for where to keep downlaods', but I can live with that.

Does the setting not get saved? or what?

I'm sorry. Firefox does ask for the place to save a download, I earlier tested it with FastestTubedownloader. That add-on used to ask also where to save, but apparantly needs an update because of Firefox 42.0.
