I spent a lot of time adding icons to the top of the page for easy access to frequently-visited websites (Doppler radar, local weather, Netflix, Amazon, etc.) but they've all disappeared. Clicking on "Show Bookmarks Toolbar" in Customize didn't help.

Thank you for your help! I decided to just cut to the chase and install them manually. I'm hoping they won't disappear again.

If you click the bookmarks menu button on the toolbar (looks like a clipboard or notepad, next to the star), and then float your mouse over Bookmarks Toolbar on that menu, does the fly-out menu show your missing bookmarks?

If yes, the actual bookmarks list might be missing from the Bookmarks Toolbar. To address that, you can use the Customize mode, as described in this article: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

In particular, the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" button (for lack of a better word) needs to be at the left end of the Bookmarks Toolbar. If you see it somewhere else, please drag it back. If it's nowhere to be found, try using the "Restore Defaults" button at the bottom of the Customize tab. This will place the toolbar buttons back in their original locations.

If "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is already in the correct place but not working, hmm, how to fix that...

Hi,

Thanks for responding to my inquiry. Unfortunately, I still can't get the icons to reappear at the top of the screen. They were all in a line to the right of the Foxfire "Getting Started" icon.

Okay, so could you confirm that they are still saved, either

  • they appear on the Bookmarks Toolbar "flyout" menu from the bookmarks menu
  • they appear in the Bookmarks Toolbar category in the Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmarks")

I will assume they are still saved.

You mentioned the Getting Started icon. Is that also gone or is that, mysteriously, still there on the Bookmarks Toolbar without any of the others?

Please see the attached screen shot. That's all that's in the Library. And there's nothing to the right of the "Getting Started" icon.

Do you miss more bookmarks?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Did the Firefox Refresh feature run recently? That would have removed Ghostery, so you probably would have noticed that. It also creates an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop, so if you see that, please hang onto it in case we need it.

Do you want to try restoring a bookmark backup? I suggest exporting your bookmarks first just in case you need the current set later, since a restore wipes what you have currently:

(1) Export to HTML: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks

(2) Restore the last "dated" backup (or a previous one if the last one has the same problem): Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
