I can see for a second a white empty square as if it is trying to download but is stopped or something. I tried turning Windows 10 security off, but it made no difference.

You have the Free Download Manager installed, maybe it is related.

Restart Firefox in Safe Mode: click on the menu button upper right, click on the ?, select Troubleshooting Information. In the new tab, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

Once Firefox is restarted, try to download something. If it works, that means an add-on is certainly involved (see above). Consult this support article to solve your issue: Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately, the same thing is occurring when running in safe mode.

Does it occur for all downloads or only for a specific file/website?

In your original question, you were talking about a "white empty square". This new tab or window is sometimes displayed, when the download link "looks like" a new tab/window link, and Firefox don't know yet that it has to download a file.
