Can I have muliple instances of Firefox on the desktop -- like one icon for email, one for Tropicalglen, one for Amazon?

In the "old days" of OS2, you could create a Copy of a program and it would act independently of the original ("shortcuts" were also possible, but it acted just like its original). In Firefox, I would create a "copy" that when clicked would go to TropicalGlen.com for music. I could have another copy of Firefox that would, when double-clicked, go to my gmail, com account. I knew this process as "Object Oriented Programming." I'm running both Windows Vista Home and Windows 8.1.

You can add the URL of a website to the target field of a Firefox desktop shortcut.
