Why does FF refuse to open a PDF that is stored on a PC?

Why does FF refuse to open a PDF that is stored on a PC?

Thank you very, very much for your help and patience!!!!

I started FF with a second profile and now I can open PDFs eeseaaallyyy in firefox - what a relieve. I do not know which setting is wrong with my primary FF profile, but I will rebuild it and then things should be fine - thank you again for your help and patience with a technical dilettante.....

Now having solved this one issue:

Why is it that the FF search function is not able to access PDF files from outside the PDF application? If someone would program the interface and make this functionality available, this would set FF apart from other browsers many, many more million of miles....at least for me as a translator and researcher.

What would it take?

I hope someone is inspired to make this a reality.

Thank you again and good night!!!

What method are you using to open the PDF -- for example:

  • double-clicking the PDF
  • dragging and dropping the PDF on an open Firefox tab
  • on the menu bar > File > Open File

And... what happens?

I noticed you have two versions of the Adobe Acrobat plugin installed, the one from Acrobat/Reader XI and the one from the new DC product. I'm not sure they can coexist, you might need to disable or delete one of them.

Rather than try to remove one of the two programs, I suggest renaming the older plugin DLL with a non-executable extension such as ".old". You can find the location of that DLL file using the following page: type or paste about:plugins in the address bar and press Enter.

You are really good. I did what you recommended and disabled one dll with the addition of .old Worked great, I have now only one pdf plugin running.

But FF still refuses to open a pdf from my PC in the FF window - I tried all three options. It would really be very good if I could open PDFs from my PC in a FF window - I hope you have a solution.

BTW: You can see my config just so? I better have no secrets.

There is a plugins list present under More system details that shows some information.

There is mote troubleshooting information available on the about:support page (Help > Troubleshooting Information)

Can you open the PDF files via File > Open File or by dragging the file in a Firefox window to empty space on the Tab bar or the plus button?

Hi Hugo, websites can see your plugin list unless you take special measures to hide them. If you want to do that, I can tell you how (I'm only showing two myself).

Do you have Firefox set to use the Adobe plugin or the built-in PDF Viewer for PDFs in the browser? You can check that as follows:

  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Applications
  • In the search box, type or paste pdf and pause while the list is filtered
  • On the right side, opposite Portable Document Format, the page should display the current handler for PDFs opened in the browser -- you also can use this drop-down control to change the handler

Good, I checked this and I use "use adobe acrobat (in firefox).

I tried all recommended options, double click, drag and drop, file open to open a PDF from my PC in FF - sorry no success, the PDF viewer opens outside of FF.

Hopefully, we can get to the root of this stupid issue.

You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu if you want to display PDF documents in Firefox with another application (i.e. not the built-in PDF Viewer).

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Thanks, but it did not produce the result. I did as advised and set the value to string, but I still get the message "What should FF do with this file". I tried all options to open the file. I'm truly sorry, I do not want to be a pain.

What is wrong?

You only need to clear the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page

I'm not sure what you are doing when you get this message.

You can paste this in the location/address bar and accept the warning.

  • about:config?filter=plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types

That will open the about:config page with only this pref showing. You can double-click the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types line and delete the current content to get an empty input field and click OK.

No I have a problem: if I type: plugin.disable and then there is nothing,

the string plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types does no longer exist, may I have made a mistake with the previous action you recommended - I have set it to string and now it is gone - please help.
