Trying to update Shockwave Flash; it downloads, but when I click to INSTALL; the connection fails? WHY does the connection fail?

Updating Adobe Reader, Shockwave Flash, and Java used to be so easy....until about a year ago. Now, I hate when I run the Firefox Plugin Check, only to see UPDATE. I seem to be able to download ("initializing") the app, but when I go to INSTALL (I hope I have the right words), it says CONNECTION FAILED. TRY AGAIN. CONNECTION FAILED. CLICK THE FINISH BUTTON TO RESTART THE INSTALL PROCESS. This has become a unending cycle. I have contacted my internet provider (and gone through their restart process) I am connection to the Internet. I have disabled my anti-virus prgm and my Firewall; nothing seems to help. The last time I was able to actually INSTALL any of the above programs/apps, I did so with the help of "Troubleshooting when using Firefox"...and that let me download the,...but I can't find a selection like that now....which is why I am writing to Firefox/Mozilla. I have been using Firefox for about 5-6 years now, and I love it! Except for these problems. I am not a dummie, but not a geek either...I just need some help.

You have a version 17 so it that is very recent and may be the most recent and up to date version. The most recent version is currently v 17.0.0.188

There may be some glitch with Firefox's update checker rather than with your updates.

The normal Flash installer needs to connect back to Adobe for additional files, which may be blocked by some security software. You can get a "full" installer that is self-contained from this page, and hopefully that one will work: https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

My issues are with this page: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ It just does not work for me...I keep getting "the Connection Failed. Try Again." When I try again, it still fails and then it just deletes what I had downloaded....it is a great big huge CYCLE.

Like I said, I'm not a complete dummie. I know to check Firefox Plugin Check page...but the link from there, is where I get (the above).

Just to clarify, how far do you get in this process:

  • Display page and click Install Now
  • Adobe shows a second page, "Initializing..."
  • Firefox displays a dialog to Save or Cancel the download
  • Blue download arrow animates
  • Click the downloaded installer to run it
  • Windows shows a security warning, click Run
  • Windows shows User Account Control, OK that
  • Installer asks your update preferences, then Next
  • Installer starts to retrieve additional files from the internet
  • Installer says to close Firefox...

Thanks John, there was link further down on that page (the top link), that did finally work for me.

Now, do you have any tips on how to install Adobe Reader? (same problems)

What happened with Adobe Reader is that Adobe created a new product named Adobe Reader DC and as a result the plugin checker site now considers perfectly up-to-date Acrobat plugins for Adobe Reader XI to be obsolete.

As long as your Adobe Reader XI says it is up-to-date when you use its

Help > Check for Updates

function, then you can trust Adobe on that and ignore the plugin checker's advice.

Or if you want to download a "full" installer for Adobe Reader DC, I think you can get it from this page: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Jscher2000-I get to the "Windows shows a Security Warning. Click Run." As soon as I click....it comes back as "Connection Failed. Try Again."

I keep thinking I have some kind of settings off, but have no idea of what those/that might be.

I had Flash 17.0.0.169 and wanted to update to Flash 17.0.0.188; which I finally succeeded with. Maybe it is not a big update, that was immaterial to me, it still won't even when I update to a whole new number (16.>17.)

Now, I need to update the Adobe Reader, that is less important to me, as I have very few files on that. But I do play games, and I need all the help I can get on Flash! Thank you.

jscher2000-That worked! THANKS A GAZILLION! I have bookmarked these 2 pages, where I found the helpful links...and I will use them next time. I appreciate you explaining Adobe Readers DC changes to me too, that helped me truly update! (as I was given 3 different versions to choose from!)

Now, tell me why the 'version' that works on both of these; all have a little 'shield' in front of the file/icon, on my desktop? It looks to me like the shield that shows up for my Microsoft Security Essentials; divided into 4 sections, 2 yellow and 2 blue? I have tried different ways of updating...MSE on & off, and Firewall on & off. But just now, I had both of them off; and they did install. Could that be the problem?

The shield might indicate downloaded content?? A few years ago I remember looking into a shield, possibly of a different appearance, but at this point, I can't recall the details.
