If you want to use firefox as your default browser, go to about:preferences and click the "make default" button.

To remove google chrome from your computer, open the finder and choose "applications" on the left. Scroll down until you see "chrome" or "google chrome", and drag it to the trash in your dock. You may be asked for an administrator password when you do this.

What makes you think that Google has taken over Firefox?

Note that Firefox uses the "chrome://" protocol to access its own internal files and also access files from extensions (no connection with Google Chrome) in case you see a message about a script that mentions chrome.

I mean the Google search engine. I see no mentioning of Google Chrome. I have clicked the "make default"-button in preferences, but it doesn't change anything.

As to removing the Google browser (Yosemite) I simply can't find the Google icon, and when I go to the application folder I can't open it. When I go to the magnifying glass at the top to the right and search for Google or iweb as it was explained on the youtube video, I get the answer that there is no such subject to be found.

Recently a Trojan horse attacked my Mac, but it has been removed from the computer by now.

I read that several persons had the same problem as I about Google taking over the browser when I search in Firefox.

Actually Chrome is not originally created by Google but Google uses the Chromium, an open source project, as it's their own product.

You certainly don't need Google Chrome to launch FF.

As posted above, the usage of the chrome protocol in Firefox has nothing to do with Google Chrome, sp no need to take action about this.

You should be able to click the Remove button in Preferences > Search to disable/remove the Google search engine in Firefox. You would have to remove the google.xml file in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder to remove the search engine file physically.

To remove google search, go to the address bar and type about:preferences, then choose search from the menu on the left. Below the heading "default search engine", there is a dropdown menu. From that, you can choose whatever search engine you wish to use when searching with firefox.

Thank you so much for all your help. Now I succeeded in removing Google and choosing an alternative browser, but cor-el explained that I should remove the google.xml file in the browser/searchplugins as well, but I can't figure out how to do it. Is this browser/searchplugins folder in SETTINGS? And I can't find the back slash on my Mac  : o )) What happens if I don't remove the plugins?

You don't actually need to remove the google.xml file. Firefox stores some common search engines, but it won't actually use them once you have changed the default, so there is no need to delete this.

If you want to, open the finder, and from the "go" menu, choose "go to folder". Enter "/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/resources/browser/searchplugins" into the box (without the quotes) and delete the "google.xml" file that appears in the folder.

note: This assumes that your copy of firefox is named "Firefox", and is located in your computer's applications folder. If it isn't you will need to change the above.

BUT, among the browsers I can choose from the list are - apart from Google - Bing, Amacon.co.uk, duckduckgo, ebay, wikipedia (da) and Firefox Add-ons. Then I can press the button "add more browsers", but I don't know any of them. I just imagined that I could have Firefox and nothing else? I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but could you tell me which one that would be a good choice, if I'm not much for surveillence ? It's not that I have anything to hide, but I think that we should be able to say and do whatever we want without being wached.

Firefox as well as Chrome and Internet explorer are browsers and don't have any search engine of their own.

It must be your choice what to pic. Google, Yahoo and Bing are big but they select your data, "to give you a better experience' and their ads is selected according to your search habits. DuckDuckGo is using several engines including Google but, as they say, they don't collect data or target ads.
