Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I have saw this issue before and the previous times that I have saw it, it appears to be related to the Firefox preloading software. Please remove any preloading software from your computer if possible.

Try closing the small window and launching Firefox again.

Hello Betty,

Can you try to create a new profile :

Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

more options

Rebooted to make sure firefox was closed, then followed the directions on the link. Can't open the Profile Manager - tried 'open' and then 'open as administrator' but I still get the tiny rectangle.

I wasn't aware of that file so I'm going to un-install making sure that file is gone and then try reinstalling.

Doesn't make any difference - brand new install opening the same way

I was getting a lot of pop ups on Chrome even though I had an ad blocker on. I read the bottom of an ad that said 'Ad Browser'. I googled that and found that it is a program that I may have picked up downloading a coupon. I followed the directions on how to remove it and about half way through the removal Firefox opened in a regular size window.

I'm rather reluctant to close it without finding out if there are some settings I should check beforehand.
