Firefox froze a webpage, and I want to recover the text I wrote in the comment box on the page.

more options

I wrote a long thing in a comment box at the www.rollingstone.com website using Firefox for macbook as the browser. Typing into the comment box was going slowly and a then a window popped up saying "WARNING: Unresponsive script" in bold and then below it it says "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue." Then below that it says: "Script: http://www.rollingstone.com/assets/js/built/desktop.bundle.js:185" Then there are 3 buttons:"Debug script", "Stop script", or "Continue", none of which respond. I think the text I entered is still there on the page if I could break this window. I am wondering if it is possible to recover the text I wrote in the box? The Debugger came on at the bottom of the page, but the window of the rollingstone page won't move so I can't bring it up to see most of the debugger. It looks like the script is some "RubiconAdServing." I downloaded a hxD editor, but I just get stuff on the right about the URL. In the advice I was given on another site, it says that I should be able to recover the text this way. Maybe I am clicking on the wrong thing to open with the Hex editor. There were no things in the upper left of my macbook window like 'file' for Firefox, but now they are there but not responding. Firefox is totally not responding, but there are a lot of other firefox browser windows minimized that are open and still at the bottom of the screen, but also not responding. How do you get into Firefox and recover the text? While I was writing the text on the Rolling Stone website, the writing within the tab would show that it had to connect to the internet to enter the text. When I went to the site I entered the text, it was not saved on the site. I can see some of the text I wrote on the frozen Firefox screen, but nothing moves. I am sure the text I wrote it still there if I could get through. How do I get into the Firefox webpage? All the other applications are working on my MacBook.

Try the following:

  1. Open the Mac Activity Monitor
  2. End the plugin-container process(es)

Now the page should respond again, but you will need to reload the page in order for it to work again, so copy your comment.

THANK YOU SO MUCH WESLEY!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, it did not work, so far, but I think you are on the right track, or maybe I did it wrong. I opened Activity Monitor. It showed all processes. The first was Firefox and in parentheses and in red type it said 'not responding.' I saw a plugin process, but it said something else, not container, but it was related to Firefox, and I ended it. I think it grayed out the field an advertisement was on my frozen screen, and it caused a yellow strip that has an icon that looks like the side view of a lego to appear immediately below the tool bars on the top and it says, "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed." The "Warning: Unresponsive script" pop up is still there and won't move, nor will the buttons work, nor will any of the minimized screens respond, and there are 13 of them.

Hello,

Have you carefully checked that there is no more message boxes waiting for "ok" or "cancel" or close or something like ?

Try to switch between windows with CTRL+DOWN_ARROW

Thank you InfinityOne, but no dice. There are no other message boxes. I tried the CTRL+DOWN_ARROW and it makes a sound telling me I can't do that. I did CTRL+ every direction, and it does the same thing. It makes a sound telling me I can't do that. I can't get the 13 minimized windows to respond either. I am replying to this message on the same macbook with the frozen Firefox. I am using Safari. In activity monitor, the first thing is Firefox, then Safari web content, then kernel task with a zero PID/ user root/ 2.3 CPU/ and Threads 63/ real mem 311.3 MB Intel. The next thing is WindowServer with a 77 PID with a user _windowserver and a CPU .1 to 4.7, Threads 6/ real mem 65.7 MB Intel (64 bit) I kind of want to stop the window server and see what happens. and then the kernel.

HollywoodCreeper,

Sorry you are having that problem, but I can't help you beyond suggesting a Firefox extension that will help you in the future. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/textarea-cache/ About this Add-on This extension will save automatically the content in textarea or WYSIWYG editor when user is typing. User can recover the saved texts in the cache window, even the tab or the window is closed unexpectedly.

Thanks Edmeister! I think I should be able to recover this text though!!!!!!! I am dead set on doing it. My Firefox has been frozen the same way for several days. I am on the verge of ending some of those processes I mentioned before and seeing what happens though. Maybe the text will be saved if I just turn the computer off, and will recover? I don't know. I am really surprised that there are no computer aces out there that know exactly what to do. If you have any questions, I will give you answers about my computer or what I see.

I am going to the Apple Store on 5th Ave tonight (12-23-14). Maybe they can help me too.

Turning off your computer will erase the text, so don't do that.

Ok. Thanks Wesley. I wouldn't that. I meant to say that I would just press the power button in the upper top corner of my keyboard and see if it would recover. hahaha I guess I did mean to say that, but I was thinking that maybe some recovery thing in Firefox would kick in like if it froze and closed suddenly. Should I end the process of the window server in the activity monitor?
