all of a sudden New Tab does not display the page I set in about:config under browser.newtab.url

Instead it displays the page in a thumbnail.

I did not do anything to change this behavior... (?)

I have Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0

tried to delete prefs.js but same problem occurs...

I may have found the problem while scanning recently installed programs I found suspicious app "Settings Manager" probably attached to one of my usual apps... Uninstalled it and did a registry repair...

Unfortunately I did not check where this app was coming from.

The NewTab page now works correctly !

I hate those hidden apps vendors are trying to slip by in their install. From now on I will be very careful with the Installs "Next" button !

What is the Value that you set for browser.newtab.url?

Your System Details list shows:

Does the pref still have this value if you close and restart Firefox?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes the value is displayed correctly when I re-open about:config...

I will try fail safe and disable each plugin one by one to find if this is a plugin issue...

the value is:

https://www.google.ca/

As it was for the past year or more...

I tried to load Firefox in fail safe mode and the new tab works correctly.

But, if manually disable all plugins and extensions ( and restart firefox) it does not work...

Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

If you compare, is your new tab showing the following built in (default) new tab page:

type or paste about:newtab in the address bar and press Enter

Or is it a different page that you see?

more options

It displays the default newtab with thumbnails of recently view pages. If I click the upper right button to get rid of the thumbnails then the page is blank, the set page is not displayed.

Unfortunately that did not help it just rests to original newtab page.

I re-enter my url in newtab but still no go...

I will try a full uninstall / reinstall of firefox...

Puzzling. Works in Safe Mode but not in normal mode even with all extensions disabled. And displays the built-in page instead of a hijack page. No idea.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Completely uninstalled and reinstalled firefox 30 and still the same problem...

Don't know what to try next...

Must be something simple, just can't find hat it is...

Open your add-ons manager. Disable several or your add-ons and restart Firefox. If the problem is still there, disable some more. When the problem is gone, you have narrowed down the problem. Now re-enable one add-on at a time until the problem comes back.

Can you open the https://www.google.ca/ page if you make it a bookmark or set it as the home page (i.e. is it only not working as the new tab page)?

Do other pages set as the new tab page work?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.
