I installed Optimizer Pro (a free registry cleaner). Unfortunately, in the process, it also installed "websearchy.com" a browser high-jacker that defaults my search engine and home page to their site. I was told by my internet provider that if I removed Firefox and reinstalled it, it would take care of the issue. Is this the best approach? If not, what is? I removed Optimizer Pro but websearchy.com did not remove.

And if you go to the Addons page, don't you see their plug-in there? And if you go to Options->General, isn't the homepage set here?

If not, re-installing might be, along with writing very nasty email to the software developpers, the only option.

If you decide to re-instal, might I suggest using MozBackup to backup data you don't want to use? (however, make sure not to backup their plugin)
