Download the Mozilla Search Reset
This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

It didn't work. My URL and seach bar still do not work in Firefox 30.

You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program.

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Are there any search engines listed in Manage Search Engines if you click the search engine icon on the search bar?

No, its completely empty and none of the tags work. Also if I type in a web address in the URL bar it doesn't work. I have to use the AOL search bar or my bookmarks

You can find the full version of the current Firefox 30.0 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

All the XML files are there as is browsercomps.dll in the components folder.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it worked until I closed it down and reopened it and lo and behold the URL and search boxes wouldn't work. I then did another uninstall and reinstall and it wouldn't work. There is no search.sqlite file in the profile.

The search.sqlite file was used in previous Firefox versions. The current releases have switched to search.json, so that is OK. The search.json file should have a list of all search engines.

You can open the file in the Scratchpad (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) and click the "Pretty Print" button to format the file for readability.
