I did a clean install of Firefox, I updated Flash to 13, and I disabled almost every plug-in. Flash still crashes constantly. I will have no choice but to abandon Firefox because it is unusable like this.

Try disabling Hardware Acceleration.

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

If you have RealPlayer installed on your computer, disable the RealPlayer Browser Record plugin

  1. Launch RealPlayer
  2. Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Preferences.
  3. Choose Download & Recording from the left hand panel
  4. Uncheck "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"
  5. Click OK and close RealPlayer
  6. Restart Firefox

If you don't have RealPlayer installed, Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:

  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

I had already disabled all of the Realplayer plugins and most of the other plugins. did not help. I'll try safe mode...

Hi,

Thanks for keeping me updated. Please let me know how Safe Mode goes.

Same problem. But related I would appreciate it if those that give advice to open "Adobe Flash Player Settings" etc. would be more specific as to how to get there. In my ambulations over the years I cave come across those programs but just how and where I can never remember. Thanks.

If Flash crashes constantly in Firefox 29.0.1, which it does with me, too, there is no way to get to hardware acceleration that I have seen.

You cannot accesses the plugin directly via control panel.

Any other suggestions? I have had problems with FF/Flash for the last few versions now. I don't like installing older versions of Flash, due to potential security issues.

Thanks

Perhaps it would be helpful to identify combinations of Firefox and Flash versions that are known to work (or don't work) -

Firefox 29.0 + Flash 13.0.0.206 works for me - use http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html to determine what Flash you have.

There are newer versions of both products available (29.0.1 + 13.0.0.214) but considering the past few weeks of updates by both vendors... it's not clearly broken, so I'm not going to fix it (yet).

Thank you. Your suggestion seems the simplest approach to the FF/flash problem. I 'degraded' my FF to 29.0 but haven't touched Flash yet. If I still note issues then I'll 'degrade' my version of Flash also. Thanks again.

Did Firefox 29.0 + Flash 13.0.0.206 and FF still crashes. Might as well update and bare the consequences of inadequate testing prior to release. Any other suggestions to counter Mozilla's latest 'upgrade' are most welcome.

I was having this issue. I uninstalled FoxIt Reader (including the browser plugin that came with it). I installed Adobe Reader instead. Now when I go to a page with flash it works. YouTube is working for me now also.

Since I use Firefox both at work and home and it wasn't crashing at work I reasoned it had to be the FoxIt Reader plugin. It was the only thing that was different between my PCs.

I did not ask for the upgrade, and now I am forced to repair crash issues which I am not good at, and look for some buttons in the toolbar that do not seem to be available. I want the X to stop loading, and I cannot figure out how to get the reload button back to the left side where I can use it easiest. I had my mouse strokes down to be able to function quickly. Like every other software program upgrade of all types, they feel the need to shuffle everything and disrupt the flow and change names, locations and functions. I don't want to re learn every time a software writer wants to re decorate. Leave it alone and find something else to work on. Why cant the bones or structure stay the same and fix in the background? though its all messed up. I left explorer for a better browser and now this. Constant flash crashes and things are moved or actually after spending a lot of time looking, I find that they are not even there to find. I don't mind changes, but why screw it up in the process! I want my old version back please.

I can empathize with you. This is one of my major beefs with all software engineers. I can understand security updates and updates that make a piece of software operate more smoothly. What I cannot understand is why they have to change the appearance and where options, etc. are located. It's as though they have nothing better to do than screw with the user's mind which thy probably enjoy doing. Unfortunately this is the way it is. (In spite of all the recommended changes - some I didn't understand - FF still crashes even with an older version of FF and an older version of Flash)

In your case why relocated 'buttons' don't work I don't understand. I might suggest reloading FF.

its not that they don't work, other than the crashing of flash or something, its that one is not even available to add ( X stop loading button) and the other ( re-load (double swirl arrows)) is on the opposite side of the page to the right of the address bar or field under the big red X and not located with the rest of the buttons for ease of use, or the ability to move it. My page loading hangs all the time, and I want to stop it, or re-do it. I cannot figure out how to stop it, and the reload is miniature and over. WTF!.

MOST peculiar! I never heard anything like that. I do understand your frustration and desire to just throw up your hands in disgust. I know next to nothing which is why I'm on Mozilla Support in the first place, trying to get a 'fix' on why FF crashes.. With that admission in mind my suggestion would be to re-install FF

Sounds like a plan, and will do, but afraid I won't b able to get my email anymore. I have ebays sale to keep up on. I might try that though. But I have seen that there is a ton of people have flash fails. I am getting by, but why don't the ask m what "I" want and where "I" want to put it. LOL never happen. Software engineers are to smart to design for our needs. They design for thir wants and fantasies. I have enough problems with my sticky C and E key. Constant editing what I type.

Pull this bus ovr at th next corner and let me off this ride. I don't want to partiipate any more. The fun is gone! Notice my spelling issues? SOB!!!!!! lol

notice how you cannot ask tch, but you must first search for your own answers. Every company does that now. Massive amount of time wast, and I don't want to read endless dribbl of info in search of an answer.

Try to set the Flash plug to click-to-play by setting the permissions for Flash to "Ask To Activate" in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins". That way you can activate the Flash plugin when you need it via the Lego block icon on the location bar.
