PDF files using Preview-in-Firefox (20) on MacOSX 10.7.5 appear "double-struck"; why and how do I fix this?

Machine: a Core 2 Duo desktop Mac running Mac OS 10.7.5. Since the upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5 I've been having a problem with Safari taking very long to render PDF pages. Firefox does this pleasantly fast, but with the "Preview in Firefox (default)" Action for PDF, the result is double-struck (as if the image was rendered twice with a few pixel shift in between) and extremely hard to read. The only other option seems to be "MacOS" for the action, but when I choose that, and then pick the PDF page from the History, it quickly reverts to the current page without ever displaying the PDF at all.

Upgrading from Firefox 19 to Firefox 20 did not solve the problem.

There are no crashes or error messages, it's just unreadable.
