Each time Firefox wants me to upgrade to a new version, the longer I refuse, the more often it will crash my browser. This sort of conduct has been consistent over the past several updates, and so it must be done on purpose.

I REFUSE to upgrade to the current version, as I know that it is very unstable, and also incompatible with some of my programs which I WILL NOT uninstall for the sake of Firefox, just because its developers want me to.

Modzilla - get your act together and stop ENFORCING upgrades!

Ok, let's address your comments one at a time :)

1. Flash. There is an issue with Flash player 11.3, however this i on Adobe's end and is affecting users of all versions of Firefox. If you are not experiencing Flash issues now, it's unlikely that you will if you update.

2. Realplayer. this was blocked , as it was causing an issue with Flash, however if you install the latest Realplayer update it should work properly now.

3. Norton was incompatible with Firefox for about two days until that was Fixed. this is no longer a worry.

As for this Version of Firefox being unstable, it's not, it is actually quite a bit more stable than 3.6, which you are using.

If you would like to see the What's new in Firefox 14, I suggest https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/14.0.1/releasenotes/.

The best advice for dealing with daily crashes is to upgrade Firefox. This will most likely help with alot of them. As with all software, as new versions are released, the older versions are deprecated as they can't be maintained and don't support modern technologies. To stay safe and current, you need to update.

Oh, and BTW, though it is not recommended, if you ever need to roll back firefox you always can :)

Why not just disable updating? I disabled that completely in Firefox in about:config.

  • app.update.auto - false
  • app.update.enabled - false
  • app.update.silent - false

great, thanks! so....how do I get to about:config etc? ......where is it? could you be more specific please

thanks

You can also set the String pref app.update.url to an empty string on the about:config page.

You can open about:xxxx pages via the location bar like you open a website.

Firefox 14.0.1 itself is not unstable as many of the crashes have actually been due to the Flash 11.3 plugin that Adobe released before having a stable version and still trying to fix it.

Also Mozilla is not causing crashes on your Firefox 3.6.27 release (Firefox 3.6.28 was last security update).

Thanks! I have made these changes, let's see what happens. From one crash every few weeks, it came down to 5-6 crashes every day, which is unacceptable.... if it keeps crashing, I will go back to Internet Explorer.

thank you ! I have now learnt about "about: config" :-)

well, I did make all those changes - nothing has changed! I STILL get update prompts and my browser STILL crashes every day.

IF there is someone from Modzilla on this forum - please note that unless you stop crashing my browser just because I refuse to upgrade (for a reason!) - I will simply go back to IE.

You are not clicking the "Check for Updates" button in the About Firefox window, are you? That will try to download updates regardless, if any are to be had. I do not trust that button any more, and will not click it.

First, why don't you want to upgrade? Firefox 3.6 (you aren't even on the most recent version) is no longer supported, which means it does not receive any stability, security or performance updates. This means it is open to Many publicly known security holes, known crashes and is noticeably slower than newer versions of Firefox.

So, is there a certain reason you don't want to upgrade to Firefox 14.0.1 and resolve all these issues in one swoop? If it is the UI or how Firefox 14 looks and behaves, I can help you change that. If it is because of an extension, in all likelyhood it will work with the newest Firefox now.

I should also note that mozilla does not crash your browser because you won't update. It is unwise and unsafe to not update, but we never crash your browser if you won't upgrade.

As far as Mozilla purposely crashing your browser just because you are still using an old, unsupported version - balderdash! They don't have the capability to affect one user in that manner.

Quite honestly, Mozilla would rather that their users use an up-to-date version of a different browser, than continue using an older version of Firefox (like 3.6.27) which is no longer receiving security updates. So if IE is your alternative choice, so be it.

I don't care about the look. When this upgrade popped up for the first time, I clicked on "Learn more about this upgrade", which took me to a page explaining the technical details of the new version. There it said that the new version is NOT compatible with Adobe and (from memory) Real Player, which would be disabled upon the installation of the upgrade. I also found a number of comments by users (googled) about this version not being compatible with Norton.

I have and use all three programs, and so cannot take the risk of having these disabled, or otherwise crashing - as they are much more important to me than Firefox. I have also seen many comments online about this Firefox version being very unstable - and once you have upgraded, you can't go back.

Interestingly, that Learn More page very quickly disappeared, and is no longer available through the Learn More link in the upgrade window.

I much prefer FIrefox than IE, but can't deal with constant (daily) crashes anymore.

Any suggestions? Why would the older version be no longer supported?

You can try a Persona such as https://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/248371 to see if it can change the color for you. I'm glad everything else is working great for you :)
