I would like to understand how DNS over HTTPS impacts browsing speed and privacy in Firefox.

Details: Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring Firefox privacy and network settings, especially DNS over HTTPS (DoH). I noticed that enabling this feature slightly changes website loading behavior on some networks.

I would like to ask:

Does DNS over HTTPS introduce additional latency? Are there performance differences between providers? Can corporate or public Wi-Fi networks interfere with DoH requests? Is there a recommended configuration for balancing privacy and performance?

I’m interested in both technical explanations and real-world experiences from Firefox users.

Thank you.

Hi. Just reading up on it now via https://www.makeuseof.com/what-the-heck-is-dns-over-https/

Which by the way states " Changing your DNS settings is a handy way to boost your privacy, and you may also notice a slight speed increase." A thing I don't consider, even on my Raspberry Pi 5.

I have turned if off. Thought it was overkill I don't have websites I visit that are contentious to me. Hiding such is more contentious :)

But wow more speed, that may be something to go for . . . one day . . . . maybe . . . I doubt it :)

Depending on the level of your settings.

DHCP can include routing that would skip DoH. Captive portals for public hotspots can interfere. Canary domains for filtered traffic check can cause fallbacks. Parental controls on some level can interfere.
