when trying to use maps I downloaded an app. I want to eliminate the app, which I don't know how; and I would like the start page that I had before I downloaded the Map thing. I had no idea it would do this. I'm not technical.

Hi, need to know where that was installed and what it's name was. As we do not know what you did. Please check in Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> add-ons to see if there is something there that should not be. If you had shared info we would have seen it.

Go to Firefox Options --> Home and look at the URL that is there for the page. Remove it if it something that should not be there as have no idea what you were using for a Home Page before as you ave not said.

If nothing there please go to your Start Menu and go to Programs & Features and look for a program that should not be there.

Please run a scan, it may find something : https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Thank you for trying PKshadow,

I don't want to download malware scan, that's how I got into this fix. I don't want to download anything. I'm totally confused by the process. The tab says FreeMaps and I would like to delete it if I can.

My previous start page had boxes to select to get to previously accessed web sites. I don't know what a URL is.

So sorry,

If it is free, and if it takes over your computer, it is malware of a fashion.

As to down loading that is recommended to help fix the issue as was the rest of the 1st post.

If you choose not to follow instructions you may take your system to the local store.

Ok, good luck with it. Just to let you know Malwarebytes is a premium program for malware removal. It gives you 2 weeks free of real time protection then reverts to a free scan on demand.

I was lucky enough to buy when it 1st came out and got a life time of premium.

It is on the list that we suggest also : You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus protection built-in.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
