I had been trying to follow the directions on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox, but I couldn't find my profiles folder (even with a search). But that link you offered for finding it (with the Help/Troubleshooting Information menu, and the Profile Directory option to "show in finder") got me there. And then I quit out of Firefox, and deleted all the other places files, and renamed the "places.sqlite.corrupt" to "places.sqlite". And when I restarted Firefox, all was well again! Thanks!
