Using Firefox 23 or higher (Beta, Aurora and Nightly) on OS X 10.6.8, when I try open the Google login page, Firefox hangs and use almost 100% of the cpu.

I tried:

  • safe mode
  • the reset the reset Firefox button in "about:support"
  • a new Firefox profile
  • deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/ and completely re-installing Firefox.

I also read that page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/firefox/fix-problems and I tried all the relevant suggestions.

The only way I was able to access the login page was to revert to Firefox 22.

The same problem also happens with the mdn search result page ( https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/search?q=test ), but I haven't found any other problematic pages yet.

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

I had a bit of hope for a moment, but sadly, disabling hardware acceleration didn't fix anything.

As for the other two links, these are things I already tried, without success.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

Hello,

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

I already did that.

As I said in the original post, I event tried using a new profile (no cache, no history, nothing).

Well are you sure its not a Addon such as Adblock Plus, usually these cause these types of problems.

Yep, when I created a new profile, It didn't include any addons and the bug was still occuring.

Tried disabling any Plugins?

phmongeau, are you sure you have tried reset feature. I can see there are a lot of extensions installed on your computer.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Yes, I am sure. But after seeing that it didn't fix anything, I recovered my old profile to get back my old profile. That's why you see all the addons I'm using.

more options

When you make a new profile do not install extensions on it, you created the profile for troubleshooting, not for regular use. With a new profile and no addons (also disable all plugins not named adobe flash) see if the issue persists.

I didn't install any extensions on my test profile. I also tried disabling all the plugins.

I'm a programmer, I think I know how troubleshooting works.

Thanks for trying to help me, but please note that I have already read the troubleshooting pages and tried what was suggested.

phmongeau, have you tried a clean reinstall?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Also does the Application just hang or crash?

Also recent versions of firefox on Mac are known to be buggy and devs are trying to fix that, on my machine(Linux) the google login page loads fine with 4% memory usage running Nightly 25 a1. You can write a bug about this at bugzilla.mozilla.org

This will not be for everyone but, I was having this hang on startup, and after updating my Lastpass Add-on to the latest version (2.0.26) it now loads in the normal fashion. Instead of a 30 second load time it takes about three seconds.

If I delete FF from the App file (Mac), should all the related files be deleted too? If so, should one save their bookmarks first?

Installing Lastpass version 2.5 solved the problem for me. Downloaded version from the Lastpass website. Add on 2.20 was causing Firefox to take about 5 mins for beachball to stop.
