OK. I found an answer in a thread here but it is already closed. I have an additional question. The moderator said there: Quoting: Depending on what you want to do there are a couple of options.

If you want to replace the bookmarks on the other computer with the bookmarks from your desktop, use the method in this link to backup the bookmarks to a file and then restore them on the other computer - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks

If you want to add the bookmarks from the desktop to those that already exist on the other computer, you need to export them to an HTML file, and import that file on the other computer. See these links for details:

   https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Exporting+bookmarks+to+an+HTML+file
   https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Importing+Bookmarks+from+an+HTML+File

I want to do the second one - "add the bookmarks from the desktop to those that already exist on the other computer" The problem is that my Firefox is version 4.0. I read somewhere in the bookmarks topics that I should have done nothing before upgrading to version higher than 12. The thing is my computer is 8 years old and I have only 512 MB RAM. There is no way to upgrade more that v.4.0. My computer can not handle it.

Any suggestions? Can I export and import with v.4.0 safely?

Yes, if you import an HTML backup then you won't lose bookmarks.

Only if you restore a JSON backup you will lose your bookmarks because a JSON backup replaces all current bookmarks with the ones in the JSON file.

You would have to export the bookmarks to an HTML file on the old (XP) computer.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML

Then you can copy this file to an USB stick and import this file in Firefox on the other computer.
Importing an HTML backup will merge those bookmarks with already existing bookmarks.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Open Directory)

Thank you for the quick response!

Both computers are old (with XP) - the one I want to get the bookmarks from (1st computer) and the other I want to copy the bookmarks to (2nd computer). ...."add the bookmarks from the desktop to those that already exist on the other computer" ... Is that going to work without deleting the already existing bookmarks on the second computer?
