I do all that I'm supposed to do, selecting save, then run, etc. I receive no error messages. Then when the download process is nearly finished, I receive a message about whether I'm authorised to install this or not, and I select the administrator icon, since I am the sole owner of this PC. I read about this in another forum about problems downloading/installing Firefox, and from what I understand, that is what I'm supposed to select.

After making that selection, that bit of information soon disappears, however no more boxes with things to tick appear after that. The whole process then seems to cease for some strange reason.

I was on Google Chrome until yesterday, and switched back to Firefox - I've moved back and forth for long periods at a time, due to various reasons, but this is ridiculous! Please help me.

Twiglet,

I'm going to try to walk you through 2 different methods to update Firefox, hopefully one of them will work:

Method 1: Go to the About Firefox Window. You can find this by either clicking Help, then "About Firefox", or clicking the Orange button that says "Firefox" in the upper left hand corner of your Firefox window, clicking the arrow next to "Help" then clicking "About Firefox". You can view the current version here. Also, when you open this window, it should check for updates and if there is an update available, begin to download it.

Method 2: Open Internet Explorer. Go to www.getfirefox.com. Click the Big "Download Now" button. Then, click Run. give it all permissions it asks for as it installs. It should upgrade your Firefox to the current release.

Firefox does update automatically, but releases are sometimes throttled, which means after a certain number of people have upgraded, the update isn't pushed automatically for a few days to make sure there are no major issues.

Hello Twiglet,

I'm sorry to hear you are facing issues with the upgrading process of Firefox. Do you have any anti-virus software that might be removing the installer software when you download it? If so, you might want to disable it for a moment and make a scan after, just to make sure. Have you tried checking your 'Downloads' folder? I know this might sund ridiculous, but I'm just making sure everything has been done correctly. Please let me know in a reply below.

Thank you for your patience and valuable time.

Hello Natrist,

I have looked in "a" downloads folder, since I'm sure I have many of them in different drives of my PC, and I found nothing from Mozilla Firefox. When asked where I wanted the item saved, the place was within programme files, which is within the C drive, i.e. the main Operating System. I actually had a look within the programme files, despite not really being supposed to - it can damage your computer to tinker with files like that, but anyway, I found Mozilla Firefox setup things, but none with today's or yesterday's date on them, and none had "12" mentioned next to Firefox either.

I have been turning my main security software off periodically today, not so much for installing Firefox, but for installing Malware removal tools, as I've discovered I have a problem whereby underlined or bold, coloured words are connected with adware, causing adds to pop up when your cursor moves anywhere near them. The words are randomly selected, and the whole process is quite frustrating. I got rid of this problem previously on Chrome, but now it's come back, on Firefox. It's basically some issue within my PC - strangely, it can be fixed at the drop of a hat, but until you find the solution, it's an absolute nightmare!.

It's probably best if I to wait till tomorrow, as it's roughly 4am now - I have been fiddling about on this thing for hours, and trying to install this over and over again is becoming incredibly tiring, as if I wouldn't be tired enough already.

I'll tell you the outcome as soon as I've tried your other suggestions - somehow I don't feel that turning my security software off will make a lot of difference, but here's hoping. I'll have a better look at everything after I've had some sleep.

If you open firefox, click the orange Firefox button, then the arrow next to Help, then About Firefox, does it automatically download the update? You will have to click apply update after it finishes.

more options

When you say "the orange Firefox button", do you mean the Firefox icon? If that's what you're referring to, clicking on that icon doesn't always have any effect. I just opened up Mozilla Firefox Web Browser in a new tab, and clicked on the icon at the top of the page - nothing happened. However, when I clicked on the one partially attached to the "free download" sign, it started to download, which wasn't what I wanted to happen. I couldn't see an arrow next to Help, nor could I see Help written anywhere.

I'm not sure how to answer your question, as I'm trying to solve my own problem. Nothing automatically downloaded any update, but, as I said, I'm not sure which items on the page you were referring to, unless they're on the tool bar. but you'll need to clarify what you mean, before I can even attempt to answer your question.

more options

Sorry for not being clear. I mean when you start up Firefox, do you see the Orange button that says "Firefox" in the upper left hand corner? Or do you see File, Edit, View, etc.? If you have the orange button, follow my directions above. If you have file edit, etc. Then click on Help, then About Firefox, and finish from there. So what I'm asking is if you try to use firefox's internal updater, does it work? you shouldn't have to necessarily use a downloaded installer.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"

OK, I turned ALL my security off. I now only get as far as being asked if I want to save this document. The absolutely nothing.

I'm completely fed up! Doesn't anyone ever encounter problems like this, or is it just me?? (rhetorical question). Whatever info I look up on support sites, they address me as though I'm a 4 year old. I have studied IT Digital Media - I'm not a complete stranger to computers. I really wonder if those running this organisation know what's going on. This is absurd. I am "that" close to going back to Chrome. At lease that way, I wouldn't have this horrible adware lurgy connected with various sited I visit. I've run various Mal ware and Spy ware scans throughout today. discovering new things with each scan, having to re-boot my computer with each scan, removing things as I go, but to no avail. I still come across an underlined word, which I think may be a link to a site, god forbid, but NO, it brings about, surprise, surprise, another bl'dy pop-up add. I've had enough for today.

It's time for me to wind down. I woke up after 5pm - don't know how that happened. It's now nearly 1am. Low and behold, I've been staring at my computer for the short day that I've had, i.e. 8 hours, which is quite a long time to be looking at a PC monitor, so it's time I rested my eyes, and had a good long break.

I'll see what happens when I can next bring myself to have a look.

Ta ta.

Hello Twiglet,

Have you tried using MalwareBytes anti-malware? It's the best anti-malware you can get. You can use the free version if you don't feel like paying for a membership. www.malwarebytes.org

Hope this works out for you!

Yes, that's one of the few malware removal tools I've downloaded. I assume you're asking in relation to the viral thing I have plaguing my PC, and the various sites I visit. It seemed to solve the problem at first, but not long after, it was back again.

I've also been using Advanced SystemCare (yes, the last word is one word, despite really being two joined together). It helps speed your PC up while also cleaning it thoroughly, etc. It has every tool in the book. It hasn't removed the bl'dy thing either, unfortunately. I've already been using Avira, as my main security system. I turned all three off, but still couldn't get anywhere with Firefox 12 - it's such a nuisance.

Thank you for your suggestion, Natrist.

more options

Hello Twiglet,

I would strongly advise you to not use Advanced SystemCare as your malware remover as it is a weak anti-malware program and can very easily be cracked. The only tool interesting from this software's makers is their PC cleaner. I would also recommend you Avast Internet Security as a good alternative to Avira. The free version is very great and doesn't use too much resources.

Did the scans show up anything? I'd suggest you launching Firefox and then running a MalwareBytes and Avast (or Avira) scan and make sure to clean every viruses or malware they find.

A few minutes ago, I managed to remove this horrible viral thing, all due to an add-on or extension I'd installed, not that I can remember putting it there. It was Codec Premium Player. I'm hoping it stays away for a little while at least. The scans showed up plenty of things.

I haven't heard of Avast. Avira has been good for me - I am using a paid version, although I'm sure that I'll continue using it when my time runs out.

I've run innumerable scans today. I don't think anymore will find anything new at this point, after all, it's after 4am, where I am, and I really do need a break .

Who, just out of curiosity told you about Advanced SystemCare not being as good as what many people think it is. I read a really good review of it on CNet, That's why I downloaded it. MalwareBytes is getting on my nerves, as it makes little chimes when it's starting or finishing tasks. I've purposely turned all musical tones, alerts and the like OFF, as I hate them. If I'm going to listen to music, I'll listen to what I want, when I want. I hate gadgets that make noises when you press their buttons, etc. Sorry, just a little thing I really hate!

Thank you for your advice, I'm just interested as to how you know so much about it.

Hello Twiglet,

I have watched videos and read reviews of Iobit's Malware Fighter PRO and it is complete crap when it comes to fighting malwares. As stated above, the software is also very easy to crack. Here is a video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoiMeR5Xnuc and I also got that information from personal experiences as I never could remove even one piece of malware with this software as where MalwareBytes has helped me a lot and MalwareBytes has been going on for years and is reputed for its updates and strong removal. That's just my 2 cents.

more options

The version being reviewed is much older and less complete than what I've been using, although I will certainly give it much more consideration - I was about to fork out about roughly $30 to purchase 3 sections of the programme, including Malware Fighter. What I mean is I wasn't using Iobit Malware Fighter on its own. Advanced SystemCare Pro V5 is much more advanced and can do a lot more than a Malware removal tool. Any way, with so many options, and operating so many functions, I'm likely to disable my PC in some way - that's what happened to my previous computer through some Norton software. I assumed I was fixing things up - I restarted it to find I'd basically made everything inactive. I couldn't type on the monitor, open programmes, or do anything at all. Such powerful devices, or things which enable you to make such drastic changes to your computer and how it operates should have an UNDO, RESCUE or HELP button, or some plan in the case of a disaster, whereby you can undo or save your computer in the odd situation of almost destroying it through a few stupid keystrokes which could lead to an irreversible error. There should be much more warning too.

Anyway, I was just curious about your opinion. I wasn't trying to be annoying. As I said, I saw a review on CNET, and it provided Advanced Systemcare Pro V5 with a very good rating. That's all. It confused me to have two quite conflicting views on the same product, which I now realise wasn't exactly the same product, after all. So, there it is...

Hello Twiglet,

regarding your last post about Iobit Malware Fighter PRO: http://remove-malware.com/antimalware/anti-malware-news/iobit-360-accused-of-stealing-malwarebytes-database/ I strongly advise you to not purchase this tool, but however think that the optimization tools of Advanced SystemCare 5 are pretty good. Other good alternatives are TuneUp Utilities 2012 and CCleaner.

Hey guys, let's keep on track here ;) System registry cleaners are not at all recommended, as they tend to damage the registry and should';t ever be used. Other functions in those programs are ok (such as temp file removers) but those same functions are built into windows so it doesn't really matter.

As for anti-virus, use what you feel is best. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, but it"s your PC, you can make the decision. Make sure you get Antivirus, not just a malware remover (malwarebytes is a remover, at least the free one) and is not a replacement for an anti-virus.

Now for your download issue, You say the internal updater isn't working either? so you basically can't download Firefox 12 at all in IE, Firefox or the updater? Update Firefox to the latest release

more options

I don't use IE, assuming that refers to Internet Explorer. I don't have the orange button that you spoke of previously, and I looked at options, and checked the box for all things to be updated automatically, but clearly that's making no difference as I'm still using Firefox 11.

I've managed to download new themes, but when I click on some, I find red text saying not suitable for Firefox 11, which is what tells me I'm still using Firefox 11. I don't know how one would download Firefox 12 while using Internet Explorer - just trying to reason with myself - they are two different browsers, aren't they?

Whatever the case, I can't update, install, or download the latest version of Firefox, and I'm really quite fed up with it.

I tried your first suggestion. It shut Firefox down briefly, checked compatibility with the "add on's" etc that I have installed. That seemed to not last very long at all, Then Firefox started running again. I clicked on Help, and About Firefox yet again, thinking something had gone wrong, or whatever had started wasn't quite finished, but unlike the first time, where I was told I had Firefox 11, and advised to update the software, this time it said Firefox was up to date. I clicked the same buttons again, as I found it incredibly hard to believe, but strangely enough, according to my browser, I now have Firefox 12 installed.

Thank you so much for helping me get this done. I really was ready to give up, and still find it hard to believe it could all happen, just like that, after so many long arduous attempts. It's so strange how some things happen!

So I've gotten rid of my adware virus, and I have updated my software, both in the one day.

Thank you for your patience, Tyler, while I lost my nerve on so many occasions. I hope I can assist you in some way on when you're in need of help. Fortunately I'll be able to sleep tonight, now.

Thanks again. =)

Hi, I've been very frustrated for weeks already. I could not update my Firefox 3. So today, I decided to uninstall the whole Firefox 3 and install Firefox 12 on my laptop, which only I use. However, I could save the Firefox12 software on my desktop. But every time I click on it, it will extract then ask for permission (I'm the Administrator, don't understand why it is still asking for permission). After I key in the username and password as administrator, the screen just disappear and nothing happens. I have been trying madly for weeks already and is not willing to use other web browser, which I have not tried as well since I have been using firefox for years. Now I have to resort to IE temporarily (hopefully) to find solutions to installing this Firefox 12 on my laptop...I tried the solution as method 2 above, same thing happens...pop up disappear after administrator rights given but nothing happens...

Is it possible for you to run any form of Firefox? It may be a dysfunctional version which seems pointless, although you may only need it for the suggestion I'm about to make.I highly recommend the option I attempted, which required Firefox. Everything was fixed in an instant. If you have uninstalled all forms of Firefox, I'd try to install whichever form you find you can install - assuming that isn't too long or arduous a task.Once you've installed it, start running it, and close IE - no point having two browsers going at once...

Next, go to the" About Firefox" section. This can be located, through either clicking "Help", then "About Firefox", or clicking the Orange button that says "Firefox" in the top left hand corner of your Firefox menu bar, clicking the arrow next to "Help" then clicking "About Firefox" (I don't have the orange button, so don't panic if you can't find it - not everyone has it). Most of these words or icons are located in the top left hand corner.

The box/window which then appears displays the version of Firefox you are currently using, and if any updates are available. If there are updates, you'll find a button somewhere in this box of information, suggesting that update what you're using. Basically all you need to do is click that button, i.e. the update button, and all will soon be resolved. Clicking that button will download and install the update your current version of Firefox.

I know it sounds incredibly easy, but that is how it happened for me, and that's all I can suggest unfortunately. I wouldn't know how to do it any other way.

I'm sure you could download Firefox while using another browser, as I have done that before - I used to receive emails about Firefox developments while using Google Chrome. I downloaded many of them, but didn't make it my default browser - I just kept it there in case I needed it a any stage.I've never tried updating it, however, causing all the anguish I've been through recently. That wouldn't have been worth the worry, or trouble, and I wouldn't have given it a second thought - of course it's easy to say that now...

Another suggestion is to make sure your security software is turned off while downloading and installing it - it could be blocking it. It didn't make much difference for me, but different things work for different people.

Hope my suggestions help rather than causing more problems for you. All the best.
