For the past month, maybe longer, Firefox has been extremely slow. The videos are also delayed. I have used firefox for many years and now I am disappointed with this browser. I cleared the cache and cookies, twice within a week. No improvement. I've been using Safari for my videos, but all my bookmarks are on firefox. How can we fix this problem? Whats going on ??

Hi mariebm56,

Sounds like an irritating issue! Not to worry, we've got you covered. Have you looked at our performance troubleshooting section? There is a lot of good information in there that should help. It could be any number of things that are causing the slowness and clearing the cache is really just the tip of the iceberg for troubleshooting. I'd suggest that you try all the steps listed in those troubleshooting articles just to be safe.

Hopefully this helps!

I upgraded the system on my computer, so now I can download certain video upgrades. Seems to be working better now that I updated my computer.  ;-) Thanks~

Internet Explorer works fine, but Firefox is becoming a bigger PITA with every single update. It is constantly crashing Flash content (can't even install Real Player or Flash won't work at all). The latest update has FF running as slow as frozen molasses.

Can't use it at all. It's coming to the point that I'm about ready to uninstall and never use the browser again. It's always updating and breaking things

Hi dnashj33, there are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. Could you see whether anything in this article helps: Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox.

You might also consider disabling the new protected mode in Flash 11.3, since that feature is currently being debugged. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

I'm not an IT guy. It's not my role to poke around, wasting hours each time trying to troubleshoot Firefox's issues. They have no business releasing buggy versions. I lost valuable hours the last time trying everything under the sun, and ended up having to COMPLETELY uninstall Real Player from my system. Not good. This is the second major problem I have had with FF in the past few weeks.

I understand security concerns and such, but FF is frequently updating and consequently breaking new things. Don't want to be an Alpha Tester for Mozilla. Just want a browser that works. No more auto updates that trash my whole browsing experience.

I AGREE. I always have problems with FF when there is an upgrade/new version. It's become very frustrating. I am an average user, not a computer tech. I shouldn't have to spend hours trying to figure this out only to have FF update again and then I have to start all over again.

I've been using Safari for the videos. Usually have both browsers open b/c firefox is not operating like it should be.

Hi dnashj33, we are all at Adobe's mercy on Flash. Blame Firefox if you like, but the solution links are in my post.

Hi mariebm56, sorry your thread got diverted to Windows issues. Have you tried the reset feature? This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like. You get a fresh cache folder.

More information in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

If the new settings folder has the same slowness problem (or whatever new problem you might have), you can switch back if you like using Firefox's Profile Manager.

Does it make any difference?

I just reset, thank you!! Seems like it's working much better, but time will tell. Haven't tried the videos.  ;-) I never knew about the reset feature. ;) Thanks again!

I never knew about the reset feature.

Not your fault, it was just introduced in Firefox 13.

And the videos are working!!! This was an easy fix! Everything is back to normal...till the next update..ugh. ;( I hope I remember the RESET feature...LOL

I did try...but still had the same slowdowns. After un-installing Real Player last time, Flash was no longer problematic...until FF auto-updated. It has crashed a lot since then. The sheer slowness of the browser has been occurring for the past 24hrs. I dumped the Cache. That didn't work. The Reset trick did not help.

I then checked IE and ran the Speedtest.net operation. Could never run it on FF...kept hanging/lagging. IE churned through it like it was nothing. Going to have to switch browsers, with all trouble I've had with FF lately. What I did this time was uninstall FF 14 and install 12.

Hi dnashj33, speedtest.net uses Flash. What have you tried so far with respect to Flash workarounds?

Terrible!

Has anyone else looked at their Advanced>Network>Connection settings? Mine was set to "Use System Proxy Settings" - not sure what that's about.

Mine keeps getting bogged down. Clearing the cache doesn't work. I have to close it and re-open. If I have anything with audio playing, I have to close and re-open after about an hour because it goes all reverby

It also seems slow, but the speedtest has it at 25m down and 5m up.

Hello firefox has been extremely low since past few months, but now its at a point where I can no longer ignore its slowness. FF is acting up in the same manner as IE was few years ago, and giving me sane reasons for why I dumped IE for FF. Since I started using FF few years ago I never went back to IE, not even once, I've been sincere with FF all this time just because its so handy. I hate to leave FF but in a desperate attempt I'm using chrome to search for a fix for slow FF. I also hate to say this but chrome is faster than FF. I will really appreciate if you can provide a fix for it, I've tried disabling all extensions and plugins but its still slow and hangs all the time.

Hi UnknownMe, what version of Windows are you running?

I assume you're aware of Flash issues affecting particularly Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, but just in case you aren't: There are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. Could you see whether anything in this article helps: Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista users might also consider disabling the new protected mode in Flash 11.3, since that feature is currently being debugged. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

You could try the new Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.

More information in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back if you like using Firefox's Profile Manager. (This article describes how to start Firefox in the profile manager. I do not recommend removing anything until you are 110% certain that you will never need any of that profile's data in the future. Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles)

Does it make any difference?

Finally, if you are inclined to go through some troubleshooting steps, check out this article on hangs: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix. Perhaps that will help with finding the cause of the slowness as well.

Me too, FF gone ridiculously slow the last few weeks. So bad it's like using dialup. Why is it that when it's very obvious that the slow problem is Firefox itself (ie. many different platforms, operating systems, computers, broadband plans, users, all with same problem) that people suggest customers start crawling around troubleshooting instructions trying to find what's wrong with their computer or settings? It's FIREFOX that's the problem....

Hi diannetrussell, some settings are known to have potential problems. In particular, you could try disabling hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox. You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General

Uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available" and then restart Firefox. Notice any difference?

Otherwise, Firefox generally runs well "out of the box" but can get slowed down by customization. You could put that theory to the test by using the Reset feature in Firefox 13-15. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. (Your plugins will copy over.)

More information in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Depending on your versions of Firefox, the method for undoing the Reset varies. Which version are you running, and do you need to go back to your earlier profile?

I'll try that after I finish work, thanks.

I have been a FF guy forever and for the first time I am thinking I might have to go to another browser as I can't take it anymore. just crashes after crashes. also PLEASE stop putting out buggy updates, I see an update and I'm like oh crap I wonder what won't be working this is going to be a pain and I hate thinking like this because FF has been the best overall but just steadily is becoming unstable so it appears. watching video's is the worse and the second is how slow it is.
