when I try to launch Firefox I am told it is already running

I get this error message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. When I go to task manager/applications tab, nothing shows up, but when I go to task manager/processes tab, sure enough, it does look like it is running already. I went to msconfig and it does not appear that firefox is one of my startup jobs. During shutdown, laptop has to do a forced shutdown sometimes because it says a job is still running (though I can not see one doing so). Again I go to task manager processes and there is Firefox, running invisibly again. What is up with this and how to I correct it?
