can I install firefox somewhere other than my desktop
When I install FireFox, it automatically installs onto my desktop. My desktop is not for executables. it is for shortcuts to executables installed elsewhere. How can I make FireFox install somewhere other than my desktop.

?? Firefox doesn't install to the desktop unless you ask it to ? Do you mean the Icon is there? Which you can delete and then launch Fx from the menu and drag a shortcut. But the icon is already a short cut.
Could you show a screenshot
The only time an executable would appear is in downloading, if that is where you set downloads to appear.
So where do you download from etc. and via what app Firefox, Windows Store ??

What you see might be this: How the Firefox desktop launcher works — so it's just a helper replacing the typical shortcut, and the app is most likely still installed in its program files as you'd expect — you should be able to remove this launcher if you prefer.
